Sony BDP-S550 review

Sony has made standalone Blu-ray players since the format's inception, but they've always been overshadowed by the company's game console, the PlayStation 3 . In many ways, the Sony BDP-S550 is the company's first standalone that might be a smarter buy...

Excellent image quality on Blu-ray Discs; Profile 2.0 compliant; onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, plus bit-stream output; 7.1 analog-audio outputs; 1GB USB drive included in box.

PlayStation 3 may still offer a better value for some buyers; competing players offer more features or lower prices.

The Sony BDP-S550 offers excellent image quality and a solid feature set, but only consider it if you need the multichannel analog outputs.

Sony BDP-S550

The BDP-S550 is one of the best non-professional Blu Ray disc players on the market. Both audio and video outputs are high quality, and the number of output connections is unequaled in this class. When coupled with a good HDTV and surround system,...

Sony BDP-S 550

Excellent HDTV picture with 24p support., HD sound as a bitstream-output., BD-Live functionality., Analog 7.1-channel audio.

DVD de-interlacing doesn’t always work., No DTS-HD decoder., No MP3 playback.

We liked the full video adjustment options, BD-Live capabilities (with a supplied memory stick), and optional quick-start function. Overall, an excellent performance, but we would like to have seen better DVD movie playback, and support for MP3 music...

Sony BDP-S550

The industry has moved to Blu-ray. Now it's time for the industry's best to launch the BDP-S550.

It was only a matter of time before a Blu-ray player would come along that was really, truly blue in color. Not only is the Sony BDP-S550 blue, but it also actually backs up the striking color and slim body with cinema quality imaging from its 24p True...

Sony BDP-S550

The Sony BDP-S550 Blu-ray player is good but slightly overpriced.

Excellent Blu-ray image quality, 7.1-channel analog output, BD-Live ready

USB port can't be used for playing media, DVD upscaling makes edges fuzzy

The Sony BDP-S550 is a good product but its relatively high cost means that unless you need the 7.1-channel analog output the competition offers better value.

Sony BDP-S550

The BDP-S550 is a fully loaded Blu-ray player with all the bells and whistles, including the latest Profile 2.0 advanced interactive feature support and HD audio.

Excellent image quality on Blu-ray Discs ; Profile 2.0 compliant ; Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, plus bit-stream output ; 7.1 analog-audio outputs ; 1GB USB drive included in box

PlayStation 3 may still offer a better value for some buyers ; Competing players offer more features or lower prices

We also looked at the some program material. We started with the introduction to Star Trek: Insurrection, and the BDP-S550 showed off its 2:3 pulldown prowess by smoothly rendering the curved lines of the bridge railings and boat hulls. We switched...

The latest Sony Blu-ray deck is Profile 2.0 and a lovely shade of blue. But is it for you?
