Great choice for old sound systems

If you have a sound system that is a few years old but works great, you're going to need this DVD player.

Built in dolby digital decoder, never malfunctions, great picture and sound, good system upgrade

Price, price, no zoom, doesn't read CD-R's, and price again.

Get one before they're gone!

Found this for $299 over at Circuit City. In comparing what was available at this price point, nothing had the jog dial or the 96 KHZ DAC built-in. This is last year's model, and was priced at $500, so this is a pretty good deal given the build...

Build quality, feature set, image quality

Can't think of any

It's Like A Party In My Living Room And Everyone's Invited

Okay, I will admit it right off the bat. The whole "DVD revolution" craze has got me in its clutches. I have had my VCR for a few years, and it's a darn good one at that. I wasn't even ready for a DVD player, and the thought of buying one...

Excellent sound and picture quality, great value

A bit expensive for the first time buyer

Not just a regular DVD player... or is it?

There are many companies out there in the electronic world today. One of the top companies is Sony. Sony has provided us with tons of great electronic devices like TVs and Radio Systems, but is Sony the brand that you would want to purchase for a DVD...

Has a great feature on the remote, Works wonderfully, have had no problems with it

Newest DVD, but wrong category!

This review should actually be under a product category that doesn't exist yet since Epinions is behind, DVD-S560D/S565D. I wanted it placed out here so that consumers could get to new information if possible to help make more informed buying...

Sleek, full of great options, allow for not having a receiver

Nothing

My first "iffy" Sony Product

I purchased the 550 about 4 months ago (March 2000). Here's the dope w.r.t to two units I purchased (one for my home and one for my video lab at work):

Excellent Picture/Video quality

Frequent motor/servo noise! No Progressive output (only interlaced)

A great beginner DVD

I purchased this product for my husbands 40th birthday. And I must say this was very scary for me. I know virtually nothing about electronic equipment. So I went in and just asked a sales rep what he would recommend. We had some special circumstances...

User friendly controls, great little remote.

Its within my Babys reach!

Sony DVP-S550D DVD Player

If you are going to buy a DVD player, there are basically 3 different price groups that are relevant for the average user. At the budget end are DVD players in the sub $200 price range. These are basic units. Do not expect any bells and whistles to...

Don't Be Afraid... Step Into the Light

Sony is generally known for quality products, and this DVD player is no exception. It has loads of features which are easy to use, and on-board Dolby Digital decoding. This is a great unit to buy and take the leap into the next, digital century.

Sony quality, good remote, on-board Dolby Digital decoder

Much more expensive than entry-level DVD players
