Freeview and 1080p upscaling can't disguise some basic flaws

Decent Freeview and DVD pictures ; Good editing features

No USB ; No dual-layer recording or jukebox functions ; Poor EPG ; Sluggish operation

Terrific picture performance, but frustrating to use and lacks features found on rival recorders

A generous 250GB hard-drive and DVD recording bode well for Tosh's latest video box – but can it match the finest Sony et al have to offer?

Holds its own against the best for video recording quality – but those operational quirks and missing features see it fall just short of top honours

Toshiba RD-97DT

Sadly, it lacks a USB port or memory card slots and there's no dual-layer or DVD-RAM recording (although it will play the latter). However, the presence of HDD and DVD-RW (VR) recording means there's a mind-boggling array of editing functions to play...

Picture quality, good price for 250GB recorder

Slow digital channel changing, overly scruffy EP mode pictures, no USB port or card slots
