New Nintendo 3DS XL review

The New Nintendo 3DS is a great upgrade proposition, so long as you don't mind dealing with a few headaches.

Excellent glasses-free 3D ; New guts theoretically promise more technically impressive games ; Existing 3DS catalog enhanced by new improvements

No proprietary cord for charging out of the box included ; Extra tools required to swap storage cards ; Convoluted system transfer process from older models

What we’re left with is a mid-generation upgrade that isn’t essential, but it could be at some point in the future. If you’ve never owned a 3DS before, this is the one to get. And if you’re mulling an upgrade, there are a lot of attractive features...

New Nintendo 3DS XL

Its name might not make it clear, but the New Nintendo 3DS XL is a solid step up from and worthy replacement to the original 3DS and 3DS XL.

Face-tracking 3D effect works, with far superior 3D experience compared with 3DS and 3DS XL. Second analog stick. Solid build. Faster performance.

No AC adapter in the box. Second analog stick is stiff and not very precise. 3D mode still isn't perfect, and not for everyone.

Review: What it’s like to upgrade from a Nintendo 3DS to a New 3DS XL

I've owned a Nintendo 3DS ever since the day it launched. It's not the most inventive or the most attractive portable on the market, but it features an incredible selection of first-party and third-party content. But its physical limitations have...

New Nintendo 3DS XL

Let's cut to the chase. The New Nintendo 3DS XL is, without doubt, the best version of the 3DS ever, and the most feature-rich, comfortable and cleverly thought-out Nintendo handheld since the DS Lite. It has a fantastic 3D screen that actually works...

Vastly improved 3D effects ; Dual analogue controls ; More processing power ; Even more features

Battery life hasn’t tangibly improved ; No boost to screen resolution

There are now tons of great 3DS games out there, and if you want the best way to enjoy them you should buy a New Nintendo 3DS XL. Existing 3DS owners might find it hard to justify the upgrade, though.

New Nintendo 3DS XL review

The gimmicky handheld gets a second shot at greatness, but this is more evolution than revolution

The 3D is a bit better ; Speedier processor for a slightly slicker experience ; Enhanced build and layout ; Great games!

Still dated in terms of tech ; New 3D isn't perfect ; Charger isn't included. Seriously

This is not the 3DS completely redefined, but the perks and tweaks make for a better overall experience

New Nintendo 3DS & 3DS XL review

The New 3DS might not look much different from its predecessor at first glance, but it's a combination of several small hardware changes that makes this hand-held gaming console everything the original 3DS should have been. We explain in our New 3DS...

But if you consider the New 3DS's price from a broader perspective, taking into consideration the price of other games consoles, it does seem a bit pricey. You can buy the Sony PS Vita (2014 edition) for around £150, and even the Nintendo Wii U for...

Review: New Nintendo 3DS XL

It's the games that make the system, right? That's especially true with the Nintendo 3DS, which judged on its technical merits isn't a particularly great bit of hardware.

This is not the 3DS completely redefined, but the perks and tweaks make for a better overall experience.
