Nintendo Labo review: A labor of love

The Variety Kit is the best introduction to Nintendo's Labo; it packs in several Toy-Cons and a gentle learning curve. You'll have a blast building and playing -- though you'll probably get tired of some games quickly. And durability is still an issue....

Shows how advanced Labo can be ; Arm and leg controls are surprisingly immersive ; Offers a deeper gaming experience than other Labo Kits

It takes forever to build ; Expensive at $80 on its own ; Might be a tough fit for adults

The jungle is your friend. The water? More of a frenemy.

Nintendo Labo review

Nintendo Labo is an awesome new way to help kids think and play creatively.

Intuitive instructions ; Easy to understand for young children ; Unique creative experience ; Toy-Con Garage offers tons of possibility

Toy-Con games don’t have much value ; May be hard to get people to go beyond building Toy-Cons

Nintendo Labo is a fun way to get kids thinking about making toys and games. While it falters a bit as a set of games, which will limit its appeal for some, the ability to build controllers and program games is gratifying, and could be a revelatory...

Nintendo Labo Vehicle Kit

The Labo Vehicle Kit is a remarkable craft kit and game that lets you build your own steering wheel, joystick, and even submarine controls to control vehicles on your Nintendo Switch.

Complex Toy-Cons are entertaining and educational to build. Toy-Con Garage and Custom Control modes offer lots of room for experimentation and learning. Clever engineering.

Nintendo Labo Robot Kit

The Nintendo Labo Robot Kit walks you through building a very clever cardboard robot suit for stomping around in the included Switch game. There isn't much meat to it, though.

Very clever engineering. Cool Toy-Con Garage feature.

Robot suit Toy-Con is the only one to build. Not much variety in gameplay. Few clear ideas to inspire working with Toy-Con Garage.

Nintendo Labo Variety Kit

The Labo Variety Kit is a Nintendo Switch video game, a craft set, and a stepping stone to learning STEM, all wrapped up in an incredibly clever package that turns cardboard into toys and games.

Remarkably clever and robust cardboard engineering. Lots of game modes with increasing levels of complexity. Toy-Con Garage is filled with potential for programming and creating your own Switch-based cardboard toys.

Slightly more expensive than standard first-party games.

Like the Switch itself, Labo is a unique concept that Nintendo has managed to execute almost flawlessly. The idea of building toys out of cardboard for use with the Switch sounds goofy, but the impressive engineering and embrace of every feature of the...

My life as a cardboard robot: A week with Nintendo Labo

We spent a week with Labo and its crazy folding forms. Here's what Nintendo's ode to papercraft and robotics feels like.

Incredible cardboard designs. Really well-done step-by-step instructions. Labo's software and games are fun to play and explore. There's a lot to do, and a sense that many secrets await unlocking.

Yes, it’s mostly just cardboard. The kits can be daunting for younger kids. There's a risk of things breaking, so handle with care. And, where do you store all those large cardboard things later on?

Nintendo Labo is a fun and unique Switch add-on -- a Lego-meets-Ikea cardboard construction set that will unlock kids’ real-world creativity.
