New Nintendo 3DS review: Not entirely new, but certainly improved

Nintendo's improved the 3D on its handheld. While not much else has changed -- and it's only on sale in Japan right now -- there are enough tweaks here for serious gamers to take a look.

The New 3DS' facial tracking makes for a hugely improved 3D gaming experience. Its new analog stick is appreciated and the clip-on covers add a lot of style.

The new C Stick has poor feel though, and I can't help wishing for a more significant boost to battery life.

Nintendo's New 3DS isn't much improved overall, but that new display alone almost makes the purchase worthwhile -- or will do, once it's available outside of Japan.

New Nintendo 3DS review

Portable games consoles are still a thing. As the Wii U flounders, it's almost easy to forget that Nintendo has another console plugging away in a valiant effort to prop up the company's bottom...

3D effect is vastly improved ; Much faster performance ; Swappable faceplates are cool ; New control additions mostly work well

Screen tech still outdated in other ways ; Improved cameras remain unusably bad ; C-stick doesn't work for all types of games ; XL model omits faceplates

New Nintendo 3DS

The New 3DS has more power, greater control and better 3D

Improved processing power ; Head tracking gives better 3D experience ; Interchangeable face plates for customisation

Battery life is still poor ; No charger supplied

Thankfully Nintendo has addressed this weakness in a most ingenious manner. The New 3DS uses its front-facing camera to track the position of your head and uses this information to adjust the image accordingly. So when you move slightly to the left or...

New Nintendo 3DS review

Switch what?

New 3D is vastly better ; Second analogue nub is long overdue ; Still relatively affordable

Battery hasn't really improved ; Processor bump divides old 3DS owners from new ; Charger not included

Most of the New Nintendo 3DS's improvements were minor ones, but the second analogue stick and much-improved 3D feature made this the definitive 3DS. Now that the Switch is available, you might wonder whether it's worth picking up this older piece of...

New Nintendo 3DS review: Not entirely new, but certainly improved

The Nintendo 3DS was unveiled in 2010, riding the wave of 3D hysteria that was supposed to see us all scrambling to buy new 3D TVs, fancy 3D smartphones and even 3D cameras. Of course, that trend never quite took off like the display manufacturers of...

New Nintendo 3DS review

It seems like only yesterday that Nintendo lifted the lid on its groundbreaking glasses-free 3D portable, but the 3DS is about to enter its fifth year and is showing serious signs of fatigue - not just because its rival, the Sony PS Vita, is...

Remember the first time you used a 3DS, and how blown away you were by that autostereoscopic display? Now recall the disappointment you felt when you shifted your grip and noticed that the 3D image went all fuzzy - the same experience was felt by many...

While the New 3DS does indeed solve some of the irksome problems which have plagued the platform since its release in 2011, other headaches remain. The resolution of both the upper and lower screens is pathetic when compared to what modern phones and...

This is likely to be the final hardware revision of the 3DS platform and Nintendo has pulled out most of the stops to ensure it goes down fighting. We'd like to have seen better stamina and a higher resolution screen, but even so, the improved 3D...

Extremely happy!

This was a Christmas gift for my sister and she was very happy to get it. She hasn't told me how she likes it yet but I think she will love it.

Harvest Moon: ANB

Really fun game for people of all ages. It might be a little boring for little children, but it picks up later and it's pretty relaxing. Lots to do!
