The Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 features a stylish design and wide screen. It offers text- and voice-guided directions as well as music and video playback.

The GPS-500 doesn't support text-to-speech functionality, and it takes the system a while to acquire a GPS fix. Directions weren't always efficient.

Style and ease of use mark this basic portable navigation and multimedia device, but the Harman Kardon Guide + Play GPS-500 doesn't offer the same smooth performance and efficiency of competing products.

Harman Kardon enters the GPS navigation market with a combined satnav system and multimedia device. Comprehensive maps and good-sized screen means it looks the part, but can it safely find its way through our Best4Reviews test?

Ready to go out of the box, standalone design, screen, pre-installed Tele Atlas 2D and 3D maps, 2GB of internal memory

There’s no disputing the GPS-500’s prowess at satellite navigation. My one worry here was the claimed battery life of up to five hours. I got three hours at most on my tests after a proper initial charge of the system. Easy to follow audio instructions...

The guide+play has a few teething problems with its lock ups, TMC, speed camera and route efficiency problems, but with time this could be sorted out.
