Mio DigiWalker C230 review: Mio DigiWalker C230

Back in May, we reviewed the Mio C220 portable navigation system , which we loved for its ease of use and affordable price, but ultimately we had to diss it because of an awful screen. Well, we're happy to say that its successor, the Mio DigiWalker...

The Mio DigiWalker C230 portable navigation system offers text-to-speech functionality and an affordable price tag. Its screen is much improved over its predecessor's.

The onscreen keyboard is a bit cramped, and we wish there was an easier way to adjust the volume.

With an improved display and the addition of text-to-speech functionality, the Mio DigiWalker C230 is a solid and affordable entry-level portable navigation system for GPS newbies.

Mio C230 review

I've been trying out the Mio C230 for the past week or so. Also know as the Mio DigiWalker C230, this unit updates the C220, adding one thing most low-end units don't have — text to speech. This means that you'll get "turn left on Oak Street in 200...

Consumer review (cnet.com)

"Good basics; not intuitive; no more updates"

I was given the Mio C230 as a gift by my brother, and used it "cold" on the way home from NY to KY via WV (i.e., even though I know the route by heart, I wanted to see what it would tell me to do; also, the boxed instructions are terse and not useful)....

Screen is easy to view, and voice directions are easy to understand, though it tends to get drowned out in heavy/noisy traffic, even with the volume setting at maximum.

User interface is tricky at times; battery life is short; battery cannot be replaced, easily (there's a big rigamarole you can go through to do so (see summary), but, if you only use it while plugged into your car lighter, then there's no problem).

Average performance

If you are an urban warrior and are going to use this walking you will need to purchase an AC to auto power adapter to per charge the unit.

Quickly recalculates route when a step is missed, fairly bright display, I like the SD card slot

Only ships with a auto power adapter and the battery life is poor. Interface not very intuitive but you eventually get the hang of it

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Not worth it

Low price, voice feature is a nice plus, accurate at locating current coordinates, easy to use right out of the box

Map is terribly inaccurate and not trustworthy. There is no free or paid update available for the map. This takes an otherwise excellent unit and makes it nearly worthless. Also, it does not hold charge long
