Samsung Gear IconX review: Wireless earbuds with great sound—and lots of problems

You'll love the strong bass and 4GB of onboard storage, but these wire-free earbuds have scads of nagging drawbacks.

Rich sound, strong bass, high volume. ; 4GB of onboard storage for music tracks. ; Wire-free design is incredibly liberating.

Control interface is imprecise and annoying. ; Battery life is alarmingly short and falls short of claims. ; Heart rate data only appears on Samsung phones.

Samsung Gear IconX

The Samsung Gear IconX is a completely wire-free pair of Bluetooth headphones with solid sound quality and the ability to track your workouts.

Seamless, simple swipe-and-tap-based operation. Built-in heart rate monitor, works with app for fitness tracking. 4GB of internal storage for music. Carrying case doubles as charging dock and portable charger.

Not for those seeking huge bass. Delay with ambient mics.

Conclusions There are currently few comparable cable-free wireless models to compare the Gear IconX with, but that will change in the coming weeks and months. The aforementioned Bragi Dash performs so similarly across the board, that at times it felt...

Samsung Gear IconX wireless earphones Review

Oh, what a great time to be alive! The world's brightest minds have turned science fiction into fact by giving us semi-autonomous cars, vacuum cleaner robots, and pocket-sized communicators with access to the world's collective knowledge, among other...

Completely wireless Bluetooth earbuds ; More comfortable to wear than they look ; Good Bluetooth range ; Can store 1000 songs to play without a phone

Poor battery life, take a while to recharge ; Touch controls are inconvenient ; No iOS compatibility

The Samsung Galaxy IconX is a first-generation product. That's why I was not expecting it to be perfect, and it wasn't. Throughout my testing, I got to experience both its strengths and weaknesses – from the complete freedom and absolute awesomeness of...

Samsung’s Gear IconX earbuds find life outside the gym

Far and away the question I get asked the most when I'm wearing a pair of AirPods is: do they stay in? It's a fair question, and for the answer is, yes, but probably not for everyone. I like the wireless earbuds quite a bit, but they suffer the same...

Samsung kept what worked with the initial IconX and mostly fixed what didn’t. The company didn’t try to give the world its own take on the AirPod, and that’s worked out for the best. The second-gen bluetooth earbuds are fitness focused much like their...

Oh, it is indeed a flawed product. But there's no denying the allure of great sound, onboard storage, and a fully wire-free design.

Samsung Gear IconX Wireless Earbuds Review

This is the year of the truly wireless earbuds — we've had Bluetooth in-ear headphones for a while, but never anything that cut even the cord between the two earpieces. We've seen these from Jabra, Earin, Apple, and a few others so far, but one of the...

Samsung Gear IconX Review: Pricey But Feature-Packed Fitness Buds

Overall, I was really impressed with the Gear IconX earbuds. They fit comfortably, tracked my distance and heart rate well, and let me listen to music without having to carry around any extra gear. However, there are a few things that keep me from...

Great sound ; Accurate heart rate monitor, distance tracking ; Easy to use ; Built-in storage for music

Requires Android smartphone for all features ; Need to plug into phone or PC to transfer music ; Expensive ; Short battery life

With a built-in heart rate monitor, accelerometer and storage for music, the Samsung Gear IconX earbuds are packed. Just don't expect long battery life.

Samsung Gear IconX review: Wireless earbuds in a pinch

Samsung doesn't like to be left out, and given how opportunistic the company has been in recent years, its foray into wireless audio is hardly a surprise. The Gear IconX is the latest attempt at entering a category that still has plenty of room to grow.
