Acer Aspire E-15 review: This laptop packs solid performance, but at too high a price

Excellent performance for its class ; Sturdier build than some of its similarly-priced competitors

Costs more than similarly-performing peers ; Weird-feeling keyboard

The Acer Aspire E-15 isn't a bad machine, but it's a bit of an also-ran—there are cheaper machines with better specs and performance.

Back to school on a budget: Choosing a cheap laptop to fit your needs

We reviewed eight mainstream budget laptops—because "cheap" doesn't have to mean "awful."

Above-average performance ; Case looks like it belongs on a much more expensive laptop ; IPS display looks classy in this price range ; Magnetic hinges provide solid connection from tablet to dock ; Blazing fast for a sub-$500 laptop ; 8GB of RAM—more...

Chintzy screen ; Trackpad precision is subpar ; Very low performance, thanks to Atom processor ; Few ports, both on the tablet and dock ; Flimsy construction and screen ; Clunky mouse buttons ; Only 64GB of storage—and it's an eMMC ; Performance falls...

Dell combines a gorgeous case with decent performance for one of the best all-around laptops under $500.

A solid but unexciting mid-range laptop

Decent battery life ; Budget pricing ; Attractive style for an inexpensive laptop

Middling performance ; Offset touchpad ; No touchscreen

Acer Aspire E-15 review: This laptop packs solid performance, but at too high a price

Poor Acer. Nothing about the Aspire E-15 (model number E5-573-516D) that Acer sent us is wrong. Literally nothing at all. It's a perfectly good machine.

Don't get me wrong: The Acer Aspire E-15 is a good machine. It performs better than 80 percent of the pack in this review round-up, it turned in respectable benchmarks, it's solidly constructed, and it has a boatload of storage if that's what you need.

Consumer review (newegg.com)

Display dead on arrival

The price was attractive, but in the end it was a waste of time time. It is possible that the unit was a fluke, however, I would suggest looking elsewhere for a low cost machine.

Attractive packaging and price negated by defective hardware.

Display was dead on arrival. Connecting to an external monitor allowed Windows 10 to be setup, and confirm that display hardware was defective. Unit returned for refund, not interested in trying my luck with another Acer unit.

Better than I expected.

For $449. It is worth it.

Relatively fast CPU and Video Card, for the price. Room to add SSD later.

Flimsy keyboard. Slow HD. But I expected this.

Good Spec for the Price

Great deal especially with 1TB SSD installed

What great specs for $450! Then I picked up a 1TB SSD for $200 on Black Friday and had HDD swapped out for SSD (thanks Chuck). So for a total of $650 I have a laptop with both a larger SSD and screen when compared to a $1,500 MacBook with the same...

Good 5th gen i5 CPU Iris 6100 integrated graphics (usually only in MacBooks) Win10 Home, 64 bit 8GB DDR3, 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3.0, HDMI Boots in <10 seconds and runs very fast with SSD Runs cooler with SSD Battery life is better with SSD

Bloatware Slow HDD Cheap feeling grade of plastic surrounding keyboard No backlit keyboard or DVD-RW (can't get it all for $450)
