Acer Nitro 5 Spin review

The Acer Nitro 5 Spin tries mashing a gaming notebook into a 2-in-1 chassis, with mixed results.

Solid build quality ; Attractive gaming design ; Solid productivity performance ; A better display than similarly priced gaming notebooks

Mixed gaming performance given the GPU ; Mediocre battery life ; Keyboard lacks sufficient travel ; Large and heavy for a 2-in-1

The Acer Nitro 5 Spin has some serious aspirations. It wants to be both a gaming notebook and a productivity 2-in-1, and it certainly packs in the right components. Unfortunately, although it looks the part, it’s not a terribly competitive gaming...

Acer Nitro 5 (2018, AMD Ryzen)

If you think making an under-$1,000 gaming laptop is tough, try an under-$700 one: The AMD-based Acer Nitro 5 grabs the bottom rung of the 1080p gaming ladder and delivers decent value.

Low price. Satisfactory screen. SSD boot drive in a budget gaming laptop. Easy to add a second SSD or hard drive. Right on the edge of playable 1080p performance at high detail settings.

256GB SSD won't hold many games. Hard-to-read keyboard legends. Balky touchpad. Marginal battery life.

Bottom Line: If you think making an under-$1,000 gaming laptop is tough, try an under-$700 one: The AMD-based Acer Nitro 5 grabs the bottom rung of the 1080p gaming ladder and delivers decent value.

Acer Nitro 5 review: A Coffee Lake-flavored gaming laptop that won't empty your wallet

The Acer Nitro 5 may be big and heavy, with so-so battery life and a fairly dim screen, but if you're shopping for a gaming laptop that handle AAA titles without breaking the bank, it delivers the goods.

Impressive graphics performance for the price ; Boasts Coffee Lake Core i5 CPU with Hyper-Threading ; Comfy keyboard with above-average speakers

Bulky and heavy ; Middling battery life ; Relatively dim, non-touch display ; Falls short of 60-fps visuals at maxed graphics settings

Budget gaming laptops don't get as much of a break as their mainstream cousins. They still face intense pressure to deliver. The Acer Nitro 5 is big and heavy, with so-so battery life and a fairly dim screen. But if you're shopping for a gaming laptop...

Acer's Nitro 5 laptop has gaming muscle on the cheap

Good performance and a low price will help you ignore its few flaws.

The Acer Nitro 5 is an understated gaming laptop that's well configured for the money. You can easily add more memory and storage. It has an ample port assortment, including USB 3.1 Type-C.

The laptop's build quality isn't the best, and some might be disappointed by the display's color performance.

Pure and simple, the Acer Nitro 5 is just a good deal with excellent mobile gaming performance for its wallet-friendly price.

Acer Nitro 5: gaming on a budget

A reliable budget gaming laptop, but it's no esports champ

Priced aggressively ; It can actually play games! ; Has a backlit keyboard with hardware monitoring software

Flimsy lid ; It’s flexible ; Upper portions of keyboard get warm ; It’s heavy

After all, if you’re sharpening your skills and eliminating foes in multiplayer games, does it really matter how much eye candy you have?

The Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop Review: Absolutely AMD - Ryzen Plus Polaris

In the last year we've taken a look at a couple AMD Ryzen APU-powered (Raven Ridge) laptops, and while these laptops have had their ups and downs in terms of battery life, one area where AMD has never shied away from is total performance. Even in a...

Even with the shortcomings, the Acer Nitro 5 is still a great value. The AMD powered model is even more so. At $669.99 as a starting price, it’s well under most Ultrabooks in terms of cost, yet delivers far more performance. And with the 256GB SSD...

Acer Nitro 5 Spin NP515 (i7-8550U, GTX 1050) Convertible Review

Display upgrade vs. SSD downgrade. On the outside, the Acer Nitro 5 Spin is easily recognizable as the gaming version of the Acer Spin 5. However, trying to find other differences between the two convertibles is more difficult - there do not seem to be...

better display than the "normal" Acer Spin 5 ; good system performance ; very good gaming performance for current games ; high-quality case with good workmanship ; stable hinges for the convertible ; "WASD" keyboard for gamers ; fingerprint reader...

slow SD card reader ; loud fans under full load ; slow SSD ; no USB 3.1 Type-C Gen2, only Gen 1 ; no Thunderbolt ; no Ethernet port, despite being a gaming laptop ; duration of keyboard backlighting cannot be changed ; keys feel cheap and plasticky,...

After the Spin 5, Acer has now produced another convertible - and this one is aimed at occasional gamers. However, apart from the slightly modified design that now features red elements, it is not immediately clear whether further changes have been...
