MacBook Pro review (13-inch, mid-2012)

Apple's new 13-inch MacBook Pro may not be the star of the show now that the Retina model is in on the scene, but it nonetheless offers solid performance and a attractive, sturdy design.

Lovely designComfortable keyboard and trackpadGood day-to-day performance

No discrete graphicsRelatively low-res display

Equipped with a new Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor and Intel HD Graphics 4000, this year's MacBook Pro is a capable machine. Is it the highest-performing system out there? Nah -- and without discrete graphics or an SSD, that's hardly a surprise. This is...

MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar review

Exquisite look and feel ; Screen is among the best we’ve tested ; Loud, enjoyable speakers ; Spacious, responsive touchpad ; Top-tier hard drive performance

Adapters needed to connect most devices ; Keyboard is well below average ; Touch Bar lacks an obvious purpose ; Battery life takes a step back

Apple’s new MacBook Pro 13 with Touch Bar is a beautiful machine, but it has several flaws, and it’s far too expensive. The update to 8th-gen makes buying a MacBook Pro viable again, but only the lack of updated entry-level options is disappointing.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (2016, Touch Bar)

The sleek new Touch Bar adds some genuine innovation to the well-designed and powerful 13-inch MacBook Pro, but as with all new Apple laptops, you'll need to carry lots of adapters or buy all-new peripherals.

Useful, versatile Touch Bar. Compact and sturdy chassis. Four USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports. Display supports DCI-P3 color spectrum.

Shallow key travel. No USB 3.0 ports. Requires adapters for legacy peripherals.

The redesigned 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro is sleek and capable with excellent interoperability (with iOS, Apple TV, and watchOS) thanks to the Touch Bar. And it has the power and battery life to keep you working all day. You'll have to adjust to the new...

Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (2016)

The redesigned Apple MacBook Pro laptop is undeniably slim and sleek, with a better screen and improved performance over its predecessor. But because of its sole reliance on USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, you'll have to either update all of your old...

Almost 12 hours of battery life. Compact and sturdy chassis. Two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports. Display supports DCI-P3 color spectrum.

Shallow key travel. No USB 3.0 (Type-A) ports. Requires adapters for legacy peripherals.

Overall, the MacBook Pro is impressive, with improved screen quality and battery life over the previous model, and its use of 6th Generation Intel processors helps boost performance as well. Troubling though, is the move to USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 and the...

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013)

The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (2013) uses Intel's Haswell-based Core i5 processor to give power users a system that can last over 11 hours under continuous use.

Brilliant Retina display. Over 11 hours of battery life. Comes with iLife and iWork software suites. Two Thunderbolt 2 ports. HDMI. Higher than 1080p HD screen.

Glossy screen. Ethernet requires adapter. Only upgradeable at time of order.

So there you have it, higher than 1080p resolution on a Retina Display, very good capacity flash storage, very good portability, and phenomenal battery life. That is the recipe for our Editors' Choice winner for high-end ultraportable laptops. If it...

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display)

The Apple MacBook Pro 13-Inch (Retina Display) is the best way to carry the pixels of a large-screen monitor with you on the road.

High-resolution Retina display. Includes two Thunderbolt ports. Standard 8GB of memory. Good battery life. Supports Power Nap.

Pricey. Requires Retina-optimized apps for best user experience.

Like the optical drive, FireWire 800 has fallen out of favor at Apple, because that venerable (and relatively slow) port is missing from both Retina display–equipped MacBook Pros. You can also use the built-in SDXC card slot for extra storage, though...

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012)

The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid 2012) gives us the familiar MacBook design with speedier performance and new faster USB 3.0 connections.

Solid construction and classic design. New Intel Core i7 processor gives performance a boost. Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 offer speedy connectivity.

No HDMI without an extra dongle. Boilerplate resolution.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Thunderbolt)

The MacBook Pro 13-inch is two processor leaps rolled into one and features other new technology likeThunderbolt and FaceTime HD.

Core i5 processor is a long time coming. Gorgeous Unibody enclosure. Thunderbolt is in its early stages, but it looks promising. Webcam now streams in HD and works with Facetime app. Backlit keyboard. Glass Clickpad has no equals.

Pricey. No improvement in graphics performance. Higher screen resolution not available.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz)

The Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz), now speedier and with longer battery life, is the ticket to portable computing bliss.

Better battery life than its predecessors. Speed and memory bumps help performance. Unparalleled multi-touch gestures., Backlit keyboard. Excellent software bundle. Sturdy. Best looking chassis in its class.

Intel Core 2 Duos are an aging processor technology. Heavy for a 13-inch laptop.
