Asus VivoBook S500CA review: Big, budget touch-screen Windows 8 laptop

Big on design and size, the 15-inch touch-screen VivoBook adds up to a pretty good value.

An attractive design, solid specs, and a responsive touch screen in a sub-$700 price.

Bigger and heavier than most ultrabooks; no extra added graphics or DVD drive; screen isn’t full-HD.

The VivoBook S500CA offers a big-screened touch-screen Windows 8 laptop for a bargain price -- and without many extras.

Asus VivoBook S500CA-DS51t

The Asus VivoBook S500CA-DS51t's trim chassis, responsive touch screen, and reasonable price tag work together to create to an affordable Windows 8 experience.

Thin. Reasonably priced. Full-size HDMI port.

Disappointing keyboard and touchpad. Keyboard isn't backlit. So-so battery life. Only one USB 3.0 port.

Quiet operation; Slim and light; Attractive casing; Decent application performance; 24 month warranty

Dark screen; Screen has an intense bluish cast; At best middling battery runtimes despite ULV hardware; High price

Although the laptop sports ULV hardware, its battery runtimes are on the same level as most laptops with standard mobile processors.

Review Asus VivoBook S500CA-DS51T Ultrabook

Asus VivoBook S500 review

Asus has gone from a company that mostly made computer components like PC motherboards and graphics cards, to a being big player in laptops, tablets and even phones. It is without doubt one of the most interesting companies that has appeared in a world...

Nice looks, solid construction, good keyboard and trackpad, a great entry-level Windows 8 machine, great sound

A bit too expensive, screen resolution is disappointing, average battery performance, heavy

The Asus S500C is far from a bad machine, but the 720p display, relatively slow processor and limited memory mean that it's not one for the demanding user. It's also not exactly bargain of the century either, and users who want a simple web experience...
