Lenovo Ideapad 520 review – a big design and hardware overhaul

When Lenovo first launched the Ideapad 510, we were pretty impressed by the performance and features it has for the asking price. Luckily, the new Ideapad 520 hasn't steered away from this co…

Decent build;Good input devices;IPS panel with high contrast; The screen doesn’t use PWM for regulating screen brightness

The M.2 SSD slot is unusuable unless you remove the optical drive; The screen has limited sRGB coverage and relatively low maximum brightness;Poor battery life

Pretty Awesome Laptop.

Overall a solid piece of hardware. I have to see any real downsides. But, that could change after some use. However, as a game designer, and someone who runs many games...so far so good. While this is not by any stretch a gaming rig...it provides...

This is a solid laptop. Graphics performance is even better than I expected. This laptop didnt even break a sweat running Portal 2. The extra RAM is nice, and the overall feel of the keyboard and such is great

Lenovo is starting to get as bad as Dell when it comes to Shovelware. But, only took about 3 reboots to clean it all up and out ; Try as I might, I cannot seem to find out why I get no on screen indicator when using the volume/brightness keys. Other...

Very pleased, great laptop

Great laptop, Lenovo has always made a great computer. (Lenovo merged with IBM years ago, IBM has been around since before Microsoft) I would recommend this for anyone. The graphics work very well for pretty much any modern game. Super fast. It's hard...

Smooth metal finish, very fast, lightweight, thin, great graphics for gaming, great battery, superior sound, instant factory restore button

Wider than I would like, no other cons

Excellent Buy

All in all this is truly an excellent computer. This is my first Lenovo and it certainly won't be my last. This computer was the same price as my old HP G-Series that I bought 2 years ago and this is such a huge improvement. The i3 processor while not...

The speakers are great on this system and the overall graphics performance is really good for this price point. The GT520 while not the biggest thing on the block is allows it to run Skyrim on High settings, and Star Craft 2 on High as well. The screen...

Hard drive speed. It's a minor upgrade but I did throw in a Seagate Monentus XT to speed things up quite a bit. The one that was in there was fine, but at 5400 it just ran too slow and the boot times and load times for programs just felt to slow. Also...

Great thing they made a back up/recovery section!

I think Lenova needs to have better support, period. there was a point where Java didn't want to install properly... and then I lost the program for the touchpad and it was all over, I couldn't switch the touch pad of... I think it's a good computer, I...

Not every computer comes with fresh from start back-up space put aside. This one does ; It's got nice functions and it's pretty good ; Easy to set up ; Works great and hasn't blown out ; Function keys work great now

When I originally loaded this baby it didn't work right... from the get-go ; When I found that I had lost the driver to the tablet and I tried to recover it directly from the lenova website... well, let's just put it this way... It's just EASIER to...

Really happy with this.

This is my first laptop ever, unbelievably - and I work in tech - but I did a bunch of research first, and picked this on NewEgg without ever touching one. Did spend a lot of time at stores and other places, trying to find one that was comfortable...

Light and solid widescreen ; Enjoying the keyboard. I'm a developer and didn't want spongy keys. These feel great, solid, take very light pressure, and spring back satisfyingly, for those who type a lot. Keys are slightly separated enough that I don't...

Easy for your thumbs or palms to slide into the trackpad when your hands at the home keys. Probably a common problem on laptops, and still training myself to elevate a bit ; Angle viewing leaves a little to be desired. Side to side is passable, but the...

Great Product

Keyboard has a nice "feel" for me. I also like the texture of the touch pad and the sensitivity of it. Until this lap top I used a mouse all the time because I didn't like the touch pads or found them cumbersome. Face recognition is quick and the LED...

Dedicated graphics, 6 GB memory, keyboard and touch pad

Haven't found one yet

buyer beware

tl;dr user unfriendly, graphics card sucks for Skyrim and it died at 2 months. Not recommended. Buyer beware.

Clear screen, alright speakers, nice keyboard. Light use allows enough power for 5 hours

The wireless card throws the occasional hissy fit. This can be fixed by restarting it with the activate/deactivate button directly underneath the right hand. A permanent fix comes from manually tweaking settings in the wireless card icon at the bottom...
