Lenovo Legion Y740 (17-inch) review: Understated design conceals superior Nvidia RTX firepower

Lenovo's triple threat: cutting-edge components, an understated design and a very competitive price.

One of the first laptops on the market with the latest Nvidia RTX graphics cards. High-performance display. Rear ports prevent cord tangles on the sides. Highly programmable RGB keyboard lighting. Understated, professional look.

Heavy. Keyboard feels a bit mushy.

The Legion Y740 delivers cutting-edge gaming performance at a considerably lower price than the competition.

Lenovo Legion Y740 (17-Inch)

The battery life is brief and the body is hefty, but Lenovo's Legion Y740 delivers fine value among big, high-powered gaming laptops, with speed and features that rival more expensive machines.

Top-end 1080p-gaming pep via Max-Q GeForce RTX 2080 graphics. Solid build quality. 144Hz display with G-Sync. Customizable per-key backlighting. Plenty of storage. Good per-component value.

Big footprint and heavy versus other Max-Q laptops. Short battery life. Plain design given the price.

Bottom Line: The battery life is brief and the body is hefty, but Lenovo's Legion Y740 delivers fine value among big, high-powered gaming laptops, with speed and features that rival more expensive machines.

Lenovo Legion Y740 (17-inch) (2019)

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is a strong performer and boasts solid speakers, but it loses points for its dim display and questionable build quality.

Decent keyboard; Solid speakers; Strong performance and graphics

Deck flexes; Dim display; Below-average battery life

Lenovo Legion Y740 review

Breathtaking performance meets frugal pricing with this 17-inch laptop that's equal parts work and play.

Excellent, cutting-edge performance ; Approachable range of prices ; Screen features HDR and G-Sync ; Primo, all-aluminum chassis

Extremely small touchpad ; Dated outward design ; Insufficient battery life

In lieu of the fancy gold trimmings and super thin bezels worn by its competitors, the Lenovo Legion Y740 keeps it simple, doubling down on performance and value rather than adopting faux-posh looks and gouging prices.

Lenovo Legion Y740 review: A classy gaming powerhouse

Clever design, excellent cooling and a powerful spec means that on paper, the Legion Y740 is a top gaming laptop

Neat, pared-down design ; 144hz display with G-Sync ; Customisable RGB lighting

Bad webcam location ; Odd macro key placement ; HP and Dell rivals offer better value

To get the same performance and build quality from a rival laptop, you’ll likely need to spend a couple of hundred pounds more, meaning the Legion Y740 is pretty good value. And if you spot it at a hefty Black Friday discount then you could secure an...
