Lenovo Y50 gaming laptop review: Great performance spoiled by a sub-par display

A strong CPU and GPU don't make up for a crummy LCD.

Strong price-to-performance ratio ; Attractively thin brushed-aluminum enclosure ; Good-quality speakers

Abysmal display with limited viewing angles ; Flimsy, awkwardly located trackpad ; Mushy keyboard

The Lenovo Y50 is a bargain among gaming laptops—provided you can tolerate its subpar display, keyboard, and trackpad.

Lenovo Y50 Review

Lenovo hopes to keep its budget-gaming crown with the Y50.

Portable chassis design ; Excellent performance ; Solid battery life

Keys lack feedback ; Subpar display ; Slow HDD ; The Lenovo Y50’s strong performance and slimmer chassis design make it one of the better affordable gaming laptops on the market, but the device’s subpar display is easily outclassed by competitors.

Lenovo Y50 review: Good for gamers

Buying a gaming laptop can get expensive. The sort of expensive that'll make you wince and have you scoping out your cupboards for things you can flog on eBay. The Lenovo Y50 is designed to be an antidote to that kind of financial anxiety. The Lenovo...

Decent value, good mid-range GPU that can handle just about any game

Limited maximum screen brightness, fan stays on all the time, slightly dodgy trackpad

The Lenovo Y50 is a good-value gaming laptop, and a pretty aggressive competitor to other laptops in this class like the Acer V Nitro and the various MSI options around the price, including the GS20.

Lenovo Y50 review

Lenovo's latest gaming laptop: lightweight in more ways than one

Excellent, unique design ; Fantastic value ; Pleasant speakers

Dreadful screen ; Inconsistent game performance ; Limited configurations ; Short battery life

Scores in depth There's no lack of options if you are looking for a 15-inch gaming laptop. Between the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro getting a new gorgeous 3K screen and newer, better packages like the Gigabyte P35W, this mid-size range of gaming machines gets...

Great Product!

would recommend to people that need a fast and convenient laptop to work on and play with.

- Fast - Looks good - Convenient to work with even in low light env.

- nothing I can think about, maybe it is worth to mention that it not light but it is a part of it's specs.

Good Computer, not so great quality of case/build.

Keep in mind that I purchased this model in 2014 of November, so they may have improved these issues over the few years. I'm specifically upset about the plastic getting loose between the frame and the monitor, now when I open my laptop the frame pops...

- very nice out of the box - external cd drive is good addition - good computer and works well, barely have had any issues running. - good price

- Monitor isn't very good - Hinge screws fall out and hinges crack and break, cheap plastic. - monitor frame is popping out due to hinges + glue wearing out - fan gets loose and ends up being very loud - trackpad drivers often bug out and go out of...

Expensive pile of garbage

Thin and light Pretty powerful for the money Backlit keyboard, with good feel Runs any game on at least High Pretty much everything in the specs list is good

But, this has been by far one the worse pieces of tech I've ever owned. I've only had this thing for about six mounts and it's been in the shop four times for the same problem and just today its getting worse. I have constant stability and display...

Terrible Build Quality

So I purchased this computer 3 months ago and it was working fine for a while. However last week the hinge on the laptop became misaligned and the plastic piece covering the hinge popped off. I tried popping it back in but it just kept popping off...

-Fast Computer -Good Graphics -Good Price

-Low build quality -Screen problems -Somewhat bulky

Couldn't ask for more!!!

Overall, I am glad I spent a few extra dollars to get this model of the Y50 that had the 4gb GPU and 16GB memory. For the price this laptop literally cannot be beat. It's a great and reliable computer, and as usual I am not disappointed with Lenovo's...

-Exceptional graphics card I'm an avid pc gamer and was stuck between this laptop or a higher end desktop, and ended up being very happy with buying this laptop instead! I needed the mobility -16GB of Memory -Really nice design the design is sleek and...

There aren't very many cons that are that major but still need to be addressed. -Mouse trackpad Mouse pad is off-centered and felt very unnatural at first, took some getting used to. When gaming with an external mouse, my hand sometimes hits it...
