Microsoft Surface Book review

If the Surface Pro is the tablet that can replace your laptop, the Surface Book is the laptop that can replace your tablet.

Microsoft Pros and cons: Our verdict on the new Surface Book

The refreshed Surface Book has very few flaws, with a well-crafted chassis, comfortable keyboard, vibrant screen, fast performance and even longer battery life than on last year's model. As ever, you'll pay dearly for the privilege of owning it, and...

Distinctive, well-constructed design ; Impressively light as a tablet ; Gorgeous screen ; Pen input works well ; Comfortable keyboard ; Fast performance ; Best-in-class battery life in laptop mode

Expensive ; Even heavier than last year's model ; "Fulcrum" hinge makes the laptop appear fatter when shut ; Screen wobbles a bit in laptop mode ; Slightly top heavy when you use it in your lap

Surface Book review: the ultimate laptop, even if it isn't perfect

That battery life, though.

Distinctive, well-constructed design ; Impressively light as a tablet ; Gorgeous screen ; Pen input works well ; Comfortable keyboard ; Fast performance ; Best-in-class battery life in laptop mode ; Lots of configurations to choose from

Short battery life for just the tablet ; High cost of entry ; Fulcrum" hinge makes the laptop appear fatter when shut ; Feels heavy compared to some other flagship laptops ; Screen wobbles a bit it in laptop mode

Microsoft's first laptop raises the bar for other notebooks, with fast performance, best-in-class battery life and a design that manages to be both premium and unforgettable. The detachable screen is also comfortable to use as a tablet, thanks to both...

The Surface Book isn't perfect — no product is. But if "the ultimate laptop" merely means it raises the bar for other laptops, then it mostly lives up to that promise. I would recommend it b ased on its long battery life alone — 11 hours at a minimum....

Surface Book i7 vs. MacBook Pro: Fight!

We pit the newest and best PC laptops against Apple's latest models in a knock-down, drag-out benchmark brawl.

Let’s make it clear from the outset: This isn’t a direct comparison of the laptops based on cost, but an attempt to compare the performance of the new MacBook Pros to that of similar PC laptops.

Microsoft Surface Book i7, reviewed: All about that base

More performance, better graphics and a higher price.

Improved speed, graphics and battery life in a similar, crisp design. Detachable tablet comes included, as does the Surface Pen. Has USB ports and SD card slot.

It's also slightly thicker and heavier than last year's version, and retains the odd gap on the folding hinge. Expensive compared to other options. Doesn't meet minimum specs for VR gaming.

The design remains mostly unchanged, but PC power users will like the extra power and battery life on the updated 2016 version of the Surface Book.

Microsoft Surface Book (2016, Intel Core i7)

The new Microsoft Surface Book may only be a simple iteration of last year's beloved tablet newcomer, but it packs some powerful upgrades and fantastic battery life, making the good even better. It's just a lot more expensive.

Segment-leading performance. Almost 20 hours of battery life. Discrete GeForce GTX 965M graphics. Same slim, versatile design as the original. Multiple configuration options. Last year's Performance Base is compatible with this year's Surface Book.

Pricey. Angular shape when closed.

Less expensive convertible tablets like the HP Spectre x360 13-w023dx or a speedy ultraportables such as the Dell XPS 13 Touch can get the job done for many users, but without the power and storage of the Surface Book. If you want to stick with the...

Surface Book review: Microsoft's first laptop shoots for the moon

The Surface Book is a high-end laptop and part-time tablet, with some hidden gaming chops.

The Microsoft Surface Book packs high-end components, including new Intel processors and optional Nvidia graphics, into a smart, slim body. Some components and most of the battery are hidden in the base, so the tablet half is lighter. The high-res...

Configurations with the optional Nvidia GPU and more storage get very expensive. There are some first-generation quirks, including an awkward gap between the screen and base when closed.

While it's not nearly as refined as the new fourth-gen Surface Pro, Microsoft's Surface Book is a powerful, feature-filled premium hybrid that doesn't forget it's a laptop first.

Surface Book Review: Microsoft reimagines the laptop, and it's glorious

It's not hype. The Surface Book is powerful, fast, beautiful, and unlike any other laptop you've ever seen

Tremendous battery life ; Beautiful screen ; Doesn't compromise on laptop use and adds wonderful Clipboard mode

Rather large and heavy ; Very expensive as you add options on
