Samsung Notebook 9 Pro review: boring is better than bad

Samsung's latest laptop fixes many of the issues of older models, but does it with zero flair

Solid build quality ; Fast, quiet performance ; Sharp, bright display

Shallow keyboard ; Frustrating function row layout ; Inconsistent fingerprint scanner

Design by focus group might not be how the absolute best products are produced, but for Samsung, it seems to have resulted in a better laptop than the company could manage on its own.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro review: Good at almost everything, including light gaming

Samsung's Notebook 9 Pro offers a little bit of everything, including a discrete Radeon RX 540 GPU, an integrated S-Pen, and impressively long battery life.

S-Pen support lets you write and draw with ease ; Long battery life ; Good performance

Speaker volume is weak

Samsung’s Notebook 9 Pro does a very good job of balancing performance and features with battery life. It’s the kind of laptop a mainstream user can get without feeling they’ve compromised much. The discrete GPU, while modest, gives it a notable boost...

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro

A few years back, Samsung's laptops were high-end pieces priced above the competition. This time they're coming in well under Dell XPS 15 4K and 15" Retina MacBook Pro pricing, and they even beat the value leader Asus ZenBook Pro UX501 that competes...

Stunning and light unibody aluminum alloy design, very competitive price, 4K touch screen with wide color gamut, USB-C 3.1 port

RAM isn't upgradable. Display contrast looks fine, but isn't as high as some competitors

There's a lot to like here: a pleasing 4K touch screen with low glare, the fast quad core Intel i7 CPU, NVIDIA GTX 950M dedicated graphics, SSD, adequate though not class leading battery runtimes and a very comfy backlit keyboard. The price is nice...

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is feature-packed for its modest price

The Samsung Notebook 9 Pro packs in a ton of features, including a 360-degree hinge, stylus and graphics card.

A great set of features for a reasonable price. The included stylus fits into a handy custom slot on the body, and its basic graphics card can handle light gaming.

It's heavier than many other 15-inch laptops, the body can get hot and the power button is awkwardly placed. Battery life and audio are both underwhelming.

The Samsung Notebook 9 Pro has a few design quirks, but is packed with features for a surprisingly modest price.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro review: This feature-packed 15-inch laptop makes a few compromises

You sure get a lot of hardware in this machine.

Solid ; Decent value

Jack of all trades but master of none

Overall, the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro’s design seems like a compromise—perhaps a little too much so. It basically does everything well, but doesn’t truly excel at any one thing. The end result is that this laptop fails to stand out as the 15-incher to...
