Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM Lens Review

The EF 50mm F1.4 USM is Canon's mid-level offering in a range stuffed full of 50mm primes, covering all budgets from the ultra-cheap 50mm F1.8 mkII through to the stratospherically-priced 50mm F1.2 L USM. Although it was introduced in June 1993, fully...

Excellent image quality when stopped down ; Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration ; Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override

Distinctly soft and 'dreamy' at wider apertures (F1.4-F1.8) ; Bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at wide apertures ; Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F2.8) ; Somwhat susceptible to flare

The Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM may be based upon a 37-year old optical design, but its performance in our studio tests clearly shows that it's not giving up yet. Sure the hairs are beginning to grey a little, and Sigma's new young pretender can outmuscle...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens Review

Canon EF 50/1.4 Lens

Canon's 50/1.4 is a bit heavier than the 50/1.8 but it gives you simultaneous AF/MF because of its USM focusing motor. It is one f-stop slower than the 50/1.0 but much lighter weight and less than one-sixth the price.

If you are going to limit yourself to one 50mm prime lens, this is the natural choice. It is reasonably light in weight, a joy to focus manually or automatically, has an 8-blade diaphragm so that out-of-focus highlights look natural (good "bokeh"), and...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review

If you need a fast prime lens for a Canon body, your choice is clear

Great to use, Fantastic images ; Top value

What an excellent lens! The Canon 50mm f/1.4 provides super-sharp results in the centre of the frame at any aperture, even wide open. The edges are softer than the centre at f/1.4 and f/2, but by f/2.8 they've caught up, and from there on this lens...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens

A fast standard prime lens for general photography with all Canon DSLRs.

Although not pin-sharp at its widest apertures, Canon’s EF 50mm f/1.4 USM remains a competent performer and its image quality between f/4 and f/8is excellent. Two issues should be considered when assessing this lens: the size of the sensor on that...

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Review

A standard 50mm lens with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 and silent ultrasonic focusing.

Decent resolution across the frame when stopped down.; Good resistance to flare.; Low vignetting at maximum aperture

Quality towards the edges doesn't really excite until stopped down to f/4

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review

Available at a fraction of the price of its f/1.2 brother, how does this sub-£300 prime compare. Read the WDC Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review to find out.

Fantastic MTF figures

AF is slightly unrefined

For most users this lens, with its sub-£300 street price, is an absolute gem.

Canon EF 50 mm f/1.4 USM

A 50 mm lens is one of the most classic devices in the assortment of every advanced photography enthusiast or every professional photographer. In days of analogue photography it was an instrument which gave you the same picture scale as the human eye...

good frame centre sharpness (apart from the maximum aperture) ; very good frame edge picture quality on APS-C ; good frame edge picture quality on full frame ; well corrected astigmatism ; low chromatic aberration ; lack of distinct geometric...

by f/1.4 the image is distinctly „soft ; very high coma ; susceptibility to flares ; visible distortion on full frame ; very high vignetting on full frame
