Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens Review

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens delivers top-tier image quality over an excellent general purpose focal length range in a nicely-sized/weighted/built body with great AF and an excellent implementation of Image Stabilization at a...

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Review

With very good, if not excellent results for sharpness, resistance to chromatic aberration, distortion and corner shading, Canon has released an excellent general purpose lens. If you were looking for an upgrade to a kit lens and can't decide between...

Tested: Canon 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6

Introduced last year, this extrawide zoom built for Canons with APS-C-sized sensors makes an attractive utility lens for the new EOS 60D or can serve as a wider, longer alternative to the Rebel kit lens. Canon's widest EF-S zoom with image...

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

A worthy successor to the EF-S 17-85mm IS USM, the new lens boasts a flexible walk-around range with wider-angle coverage equivalent to 24mm, a slightly brighter aperture when zoomed-out, very respectable optical quality (especially at 15mm), along...

Flexible range including 24mm coverage., Sharp details into the corners., Quick and quiet USM AF with non-rotating barrel., Smooth manual focusing ring and distance window.

Poor vignetting with visible darkening in corners., Modest image stabilisation in our tests., Some creep between 24 and 50mm (actual)., As usual for a non-L lens, no hood supplied.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM

The EF-S 15-85mm’s unusually wide zoom range and high optical quality make it a good match for high-end cameras like the EOS 50D and 7D.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

With Image Stablisation, UD elements and an Ultrasonic Motor, is this feature-filled objective the perfect kit-lens replacement?

Excellent handling and IS system

Drop-off in MTF curves

With an on-the-street price of around £600 this is a lovely zoom that focuses quickly and stabilises images wonderfully - its downsides are minor in comparison with these strengths.

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

A 5.6x standard zoom for Canon EF-S compatible cameras, which provides an angle of view equivalent to a 24-136mm lens on a 35mm camera, plus a 4-stop image stabiliser.

Useful zoom range

Flare and ghosting performance (no lens hood supplied)

Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

The subject of universal zoom lenses made by Canon is very interesting and that's for a couple of reasons, as it tells us both about the differences between individual manufacturers and the laws governing the market.

Universal focal lengths ; Excellent image quality at the center of the frame, starting from the maximum aperture, at all focal lengths ; Very good image quality at the edge of the frame ; Chromatic aberration medium or small for most combinations of...

Large chromatic aberration at 15 mm and around the maximum aperture ; Large distortion at the widest angle ; Noticeable vignetting ; Build quality at this price could be better ; Poor standard equipment

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS - Review / Lens Test Report

The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 USM IS is certainly a desirable lens ... if you can get a good one (ours had a bit of QC issue). The resolution is generally very good from 15-50mm whereas you should expect some border softness at 85mm. A weak spot of...
