Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition is optically identical to the standard version of the lens, but is priced higher.

Sharp. Compact. Wide aperture. Internal focus motor.

No vibration reduction or aperture ring. Priced higher than standard version of lens based only on cosmetic changes.

If you're in the market for a 50mm prime for your Nikon SLR, the standard version of the 50mm f/1.8G is a solid choice; we awarded it a four-star rating. This lens is the same product at a higher price, so we're rating it just a bit lower. If you buy...

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G isn't the sharpest 50mm lens that we've tested, but it still offers excellent image quality at a modest price.

Sharp. Compact. Fast aperture. Inexpensive.

No vibration reduction or aperture ring.

A fast 50mm lens should be in every DSLR shooter's camera bag, and the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G is an inexpensive standard prime that delivers very appealing image quality. You do need to stop-down to f/2.8 to obtain really sharp results in the...

Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor Review

With so many choices in the 50mm category, even just from Nikon, it's hard to figure who the target audience for the 50mm ƒ/1.8G. Obviously, owners of consumer bodies such as the D3100 or D5100, which don't have mechanical autofocus screws, will...

Lens Test: Nikon 50mm F/1.8 ED Nikkor

This fulL-FRAME normal lens ($220, street) is one of the least expensive entrées to the world of high-speed Nikkor glass. As with all Nikon G lenses, its diaphragm settings are handled electronically by the camera; there's no aperture ring. On Nikon DX...

Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G

This new prime lens has a very affordable price. The WDC review of the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G discovers that its performance is impressive too

Fantastic full-frame performance

Some chromatic aberration on DX-format sensor

Overall, 50mm primes are rather unglamorous lenses that can look out-dated in a world where zooms are truly dominant. In fact they are often high performers despite their low prices and are therefore worthy of very serious consideration. There is...
