Pentax 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED SMC DA review by aesace

I replaced old Pentax F 100-300 4,5-5,6 with this new Pentax 55-300. The optical quality is very nice also on 300mm , low CA, good in backlight, but the AF speed is very slow even in comparison with the old Pentax 100-300.

Optical quality, build quality, focus range

slow AF

Pentax 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED SMC DA review by ayast

I have actually [partially] replaced a Sigma 105mm macro (a great lens) with this one. It is such a surprising product. I chose it based on reviews (not on this site, which I began consulting later), but I feel it is underappreciated. I am not too...

One SWEET zoom lens!

I bought this lens to capture high school soccer action. It integrates well both with the Pentax K20D and Ist D cameras and has provided good images even at low light (dusk) shooting conditions under field lights. The minimum focus distance has not...

Pentax 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED SMC DA review by joekashi

This is an excellent lens for the money, generally sharp and contrasty at 200% at all tested focal lengths, including 300mm. I found it to be much sharper at longer focal lengths than the Pentax 50-200 and the Tamron 70-300 tele zooms that this lens...

sharp at most focal lengths

Great lens with small profile

I used this lens for wildlife viewing. The wide diameter lens captures lots of light so when the camera is used in auto mode it can take a quick picture of moving objects with nice sharp defined edges. Unfortunately you will have to buy a separate set...

nice balance

I am new to shooting moving objects. It is light weight and easy to get centered on the shots. The lense auto focus is a little erattic at first but I figured it out after 1/2 an hour of shooting. Not a long time in the over all sceme of learning to use...

Pentax 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED SMC DA review by jamesm007

I have owned the Tamron and Quantaray 70-300mm lens, they had too much PF for me. I bought the Sigma 70-300mm APO instead. The Sigma was fine but for its softness ~300mm at all but the highest f numbers (over f7). The Pentax 55-300mm is very good at...

Sharp at 300mm f5.8, a bit smaller that it rivals, good control of CA/PF

A little expensive compared to it rivals, but worth it
