50 mm f/2.8 Macro

a bit too high vignetting by f/2.8,, chromatic aberration at the maximum relative aperture could have been lower.

In this summary it would be better if we compared the Sony 2.8/50 with a Canon EF-S 2.8/60 Macro or a Sigma 2.8/50 Macro. Unfortunately neither of these instruments have been tested yet so out of necessity the tested device is being compared to the...

Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens - SAL-50M28

A compact macro-focus lens that covers the full range from life-size to infinity. "Life size" macro imaging means that the image you capture is the same size as the subject in reality -- giving you spectacularly sharp photos of insects, flowers,...

You can get closer to your subject to capture low-angle shots of insects, flowers and other natural wonders -- and broad depth of field lets you keep backgrounds in focus too

Great Macro

This lens is hard to beat for sharpness. I think the 100mm f2.8 macro has a slight edge on it due to the focusing distance on live insects. The 50 sometimes focuses too close and the insects fly away. This lens also doubles as a great portrait lens as...

Great prime lens

I have been a Minolta/Sony user for years. Over the years I have preferred fixed focal length lenses to zooms. This lens reinforces that preference. The lens is constructed really well, from the built in hood to the metal lens mount. It has great...

Beautiful Macros!

This lens produces very sharp images regardless if you're in macro or limiter mode. It also doubles up great as a portrait lens if you're on a crop sensor camera (bringing you up to 75mm). It's built quite well, feels solid in the hand, and isn't too...

Pretty much everything you'd expect from the lens

Little bit of play in the focus ring

Very sharp Macro

This is overall a great lens. It produces very sharp images and is fast enough to do handheld shots at lower ratios than 1:4 magnification. For anything 1:1 through 1:4, I'd highly recommend a tripod as shutter speeds will quickly drop. The focus throw...

Very sharp photos

Can be slow to focus, even with limiter

Another useful lens from Sony

Some critics have called this a 'dated' design. What if it was simply done right the first time? Humor aside, I picked this up as a companion for the 100M28, and between the two of them, there are very few macro to normal situations they cannot handle...
