Apple TV review

In a day where everyone (including us) expects their gadgets to do everything, Apple again bucks the trend and releases a product that does a few things, but tries to do them very well. From day one the Apple TV wasn't expected to be the right for ...

Apple TV

Apple's video receiver is stylish and easy to set up, but you're confined mostly to iTunes-supported content. On the other hand, that content now includes downloadable movies.

Very easy to set up, Smooth, block-free images

Limited to iTunes-compatible media, High-def capability maxes out at 720p

Apple TV (2007) review: Apple TV

With its enhanced iTunes video offerings, PC-free operation, and a lower price tag, the updated Apple TV is a compelling Internet-enabled entertainment device for the living room.

Provides access to iTunes-based movie rentals, TV shows, music, photos, and podcasts, as well as YouTube videos on your living room TV; streams media from networked Mac or Windows PCs; purchases and rentals can be done directly through iTunes Store on...

No support for Netflix, Pandora, and other major online media services found on most new Blu-ray players; doesn't work with older, non-widescreen TVs; movie rentals must be watched within 24 hour timeframe; no subscription payment options; lackluster...

Apple TV provides a slick venue for iTunes-based media in the living room, but the average Blu-ray player now provides a wider array of online media options.

Editors' Note (October 1, 2010): This old version of the Apple TV has been replaced with a smaller $99 Apple TV that adds Netflix compatibility.

Apple TV Review: Easy Interface, Limited Content

Get the Apple TV if you want to watch iTunes videos on your home theater. If you're not a heavy iTunes user, consider a Roku box or a Chromecast instead.

Simple interface ; Only player that works with iTunes ; AirPlay beams media from Apple devices

Fewer content choices than competitors ; No universal search capability ; Not much free content

This set-top box may be the best choice for heavy iTunes and Apple product users, but it has less content than competitors and a dated design.

Apple TV Review

The Apple TV is a well-thought device. It is great if you have an iPhone or iPad, mostly if you buy lots of contents on the iTunes Store. It actually brings your iTunes' content to your living room (or sleeping room, or kitchen) TV. If you are addicted...

Apple TV Review

A comprehensive portal to our current digital entertainment, plus online rentals, Eye-popping video quality, with 5.1 audio and nifty menus, HDMI-only video output: This thing is hardcore!, iPhone/iPod Touch remote app works great (and impressed the wife)

HDMI-only video output: Is this thing too hardcore?, High-definition movie rentals painfully slow, Included remote control pales next to iPhone/iPod touch app (see Turn-Ons)

Many times have my colleagues and I here at Big Picture Big Sound shared the wonders of Internet-ready TVs, as technologies have converged to bring once-unimaginable benefits to the home theater enthusiast. But since not everyone is in a position to...
