SteelSeries Rival review: Name-brand performance on a budget

The SteelSeries Rival pares the gaming mouse back to its bare necessities.

Name-brand quality on the cheap ; Decent sensor

Thumb buttons are oddly pointy ; A bit more money would get you a much better mouse ; Almost-ambidextrous shape, but without the ambidextrous perks

The SteelSeries Rival 100 is a solid option for budget-minded gamers, but some odd design flaws hold it back.

SteelSeries Rival 100 Review (Page 1 of 4)

As it turned out, $40 can buy you quite a bit with the SteelSeries Rival 100. It is not going to send Sensei owners out throwing their $80 mouse away tomorrow, but seriously though -- you are getting quite a bit of bang for your buck. Firstly, let us...

Smooth, glossy finish ; Multi-color backlight ; Correct weight ; Color options

In conclusion, the Rival 100 is a Great affordable mouse. The mouse is made of all plastic and at first can be deceiving and you may think the Rival 100 has no weight. I can guarantee that this is not the case and the Rival 100 has a nice weighty feel....

Simple, economic, can't beat it for the price.

Although it's close to the company with the sails' offering, I think this one is slightly better since it comes in different flavors of LEDs

Really like the weight of it and the ease of use. I was thinking claw grip on this would be a no-no, but it worked well for Overwatch, World of Tanks and BF4. I would like for it to be full plug and play so no software needs to be installed (and it...

Might be a tad small for those of us with bigger hands, so be careful if you're one of those.

The SteelSeries Rival 100 Gaming Mouse has many great features but there is just one thing I would like to have seen included, like several different sized weights, I find that the mouse is just a tad to light for me, other than that it is just about...

Very good minimal-frills mouse for casual use or gaming

If you want a fairly basic, inexpensive gaming mouse, this is a good purchase. I've been gaming with it in Path of Exile, Doom, and Battlefield 4 and have had no complaints so far compared to my much more expensive Logitech G700.

The balance of weight and size on this mouse fit my large hands well - I don't have to "claw" grip the mouse if I don't want to. For casual use, the mouse works just fine as plug-n-play, and the mouse works great for gaming with the Steelseries Engine...

I didn't like the lighting as much as I expected to, I thought it looked a bit "cheap"... like a white LED shining through cheap purple plastic. No big deal though, you can change the illumination settings if you don't like it.

I'm growing to love SteelSeries

The cable, logo, and LED colors were all purple when I got it, not exactly my style. However, the software that comes with the mouse is some of the easiest to use that I've yet found (unlike Corsair's software which is awful to use). I was able to get...

Simple and straightforward Easy to use software Great feel in the hand

I don’t like the color scheme of the one I got (purple cable), but there are plenty of others The LED’s are color adjustable, but the logo/scroll wheel are colored, so you miss out on some ability to fully use the adjustable LED’s
