Review: Wacom Inkling

Wacom's Inkling, a physical pen that tracks your drawings and digitizes them on the fly, shows promise but it isn't perfect.

Slick concept. Easy to use, intuitive. You can rotate the paper or work at any angle. A nice glimpse of what the future of Wacom might hold

Accuracy of the digital translation has a way to go. Better for first drafts than finished works. Be careful not to bump it too hard — especially when pressing the “New Layer” button

Wacom Inkling

The Wacom Inkling is a nifty idea and very enjoyable to work with, although it's best as a set-it-and-forget-it device for capturing rough sketches, rather than a precision tool for professional artists.

Novel design really works. Lots of fun to use. Slick, self-contained charging case. Compatible with PCs and Macs. Exports to a wide variety of formats. Very easy to use in practice.

Not quite accurate enough for very precise drawings. A bit expensive as a rough concepting tool. The included Sketch Manager software works but is overly obtuse.

Results and Conclusions When I transferred the drawings to the computer, the results were quite good, if not extremely precise. You can easily tell that whatever I drew on paper was reflected accurately in the digital version, at least in a general...

Wacom Inkling review

Check out the desk of your average graphics designer and you'll most likely find a Wacom tablet plugged into their computer, likely the Bamboo or — if they have the budget — a Cintiq. These tablets...

Excellent all-in-one carrying case design ; Layering capabilities for designers ; Compatible with any piece of paper

Sketch Manager software is unintuitive and poorly designed ; Pen can be uncomfortable ; Easy to miss strokes unintentionally due to hand placement

The Inkling should satisfy a small group of target customers, but it's not for everyone

Wacom Inkling Smart Pen Review →

If you're a creative professional that needs something to capture quick ideas on the go in a small and portable form factor then the Inkling is for you. At $200 though, it isn't a solution for a creative type that likes to sketch on paper.

Sturdy build quality ; Intuitive design ; Ability to add layers

Tracking tracking tracking ; Price ; Inability to save layered files ; Can't save time-lapse

Wacom Inkling Review

Wacom's Inkling is a whole new type of gadget—a drawing tablet minus the tablet.

The Inkling is a new category of device. Unlike traditional tablets, you can’t see what you’re drawing on screen as you draw it, but you can use the Inkling anywhere at any time with just an ordinary sheet of paper. Our biggest disappointments are...

Wacom Inkling review

After seeing impressive preview footage of the Wacom Inkling, we were very keen to get our hands on it. A tool that enables you to sketch directly to paper with a ballpoint pen, then upload the results to your PC for editing? Sweet. But there was a...

The highest praise we can give is this; we didn’t want to send the Inkling back. It has clear, professional applications in design and the arts but, more importantly, it’s load of fun. If you’re in the market for a budget graphics tablet, we suggest...

Hardware review: Wacom Inkling

No other product does what the Wacom Inkling can do – turn paper sketches into vector illustrations – so is this the missing link for getting drawings onto your computer?

Excellent design

Pen feels cheap

Wacom Inkling

Providing a link between your sketchbook and your digital painting software, the Inkling is a truly revolutionary product…

The Inkling sounds simple because it is. And the device simply works. Drawings from your sketchbook translate in fantastic detail. It’s easy to set up. Easy to transfer images. And therefore easy to sketch out and about and then refine and develop your...

Inkling Digital Sketch Pen

The jury was impressed by this sketch pen's high degree of mobility and flexibility. It can be operated by itself without additional devices – anytime and anywhere – in order to bring ideas to paper and digitalise them at a later point in time.
