Sony VPL-ES2

The Sony brand is known for slick design, high-quality video, and--unfortunately--premium pricing. This is indeed the case with the Sony SuperLite VPL-ES2, a simple but elegantly designed entry-level projector. Although its contrast performance is...

Automatic setup; video-oriented features; slick design; good color quality.

Premium price; low brightness and contrast; limited remote control.

The Sony VPL-ES2 impressed us with its style rather than its substance, though its video capabilities are best-in-class.

Sony VPL-CS7

The Sony VPL-CS7 projector has a few more features than some competing SVGA projectors in the 6-pound range, though it is missing a few as well.

Attractive case with motorized lens cover and tilt. Good image quality. Nice on-screen menu system.

Limited connectivity. No mouse functions on remote.

Sony VPL-CX85

The Sony VPL-CX85 is not as tiny or light as some projectors, yet it is practical, portable, and a veritable light cannon compared with smaller units. Its price ($3,700 list) is fairly steep, but it packs a lot of premium features.

Strong wireless features. Good, bright image. Motorized focus, zoom, and tilt

Cluttered main remote control with inconsistent interface. Limited quality on built-in sound

Sony VPL-ES2

Straightforward to configure, automatic adjustment, long lamp life

Some slight distortion in the corners from the short-throw lens

Sony's VPLES2 produces bright images, though the lens slightly distorts the image at the corners.

Sony VPL-ES3 review

Can Sony's VPL-ES3 projector bring anything new?

2,000 lumens ; 1:1.4 throw ratio ; 36dB noise output

300:1 contrast ratio ; 0.63in p-Si LCD ; 800x600

There's really nothing of interest here for budget projector buyers

Sony VPL-ES2

Sony's VPL-ES2 is based on LCD technology, which is traditionally cheaper than the alternative DLP (digital light processing). Nevertheless, its £655 price tag is impressively low. For this sort of money you shouldn't expect a host of eye-popping...

The Sony is incredibly cheap, but there are some tough competitors at this end of the market. In many respects, this is a perfectly decent projector. However, viewed alongside some of its rivals at a similar price point, it doesn't quite match up to...
