Sony STR-DH520 review: A surround sound amp that supports 3D playback

Simple setup ; 3D pass-through ; Auto level calibration works well

No high-end codec support

The Sony STR-DH520 is a reasonable choice for an entry-level A/V receiver, and its inclusion of 3D play-through is useful for anyone setting up a cheap 3D home theatre.

Added 3/5/2016: When it was working it was GREAT it just didn't last so I dropped it to 2 stars. Sorry sony you used to be known for enduring quality I'm not sure when you cheaped out. Started shutting off randomly a few times a day about a year ago...

Nice system

Inexpensive 7.1 system that does a very nice job.

Runs my system flawlessly, I have both a Computer with HDMI out and a BD player connected and it delivers nice sound a good device changing.

Can get hot when the volume is turned up fairly high.

Junk

I have always bought Sony receivers (4th one) and they have always lived forever (only my oldest one finally tanked after 20 years. Won't get refurbished one again for sure.

Sounded good for about a month. Low price. That's where I got suckered.

5 days after warranty ends, it starts failing if the volume is turned up beyond 40 (out of 70). Now have to pay the price of a new one. I'm going to ask Sony if they will honor it just 5 days after warranty, but I'm guessing they won't replace it.

All went well.

I love my receiver and my 7.1 surround sound system but it is very frustrating that I cannot calibrate it because the mic for the calibrations did not come with it.

It was cheap and was just what I needed for my first sound system and it works wonderfully

The only con is the missing mic for the auto calibration feature which is the only way to calibrate the receiver. I would not care so much if I could easily find a mic to use to auto calibrate it but I cannot seem to find one with the right type of...
