Yamaha's RX-V473 receiver is solid, but...

The Yamaha RX-V473 does a solid job, but its competition offers better value.

The ; has built-in networking functionality, including AirPlay and Internet radio. Its sound quality is solid with both music and movies, and it can be controlled with a smartphone app that's available for iOS and Android.

Nearly every competing receiver offers more HDMI inputs at this price level. The included remote is difficult to use, and the UI looks painfully dated.

The Yamaha RX-V473 is a serviceable 5.1 AV receiver, but given that it has only four HDMI inputs, competing models offer a better value.

Yamaha RX-V473 review

AV receivers are notoriously jam-packed with features, most of which you'll never use. Yamaha's RX-V473 ($350 street price) is notably lacking many of those niche capabilities common on other receivers, but it's also light on the one feature that...

Yamaha RX-V473

The Yamaha RX-V473 holds up the company's tradition of solid-performing home theater receivers, but its iPod and AirPlay connectivity still needs work.

Powerful amplifiers. Robust selection of DSP modes. Supports AirPlay and iPod integration. Wi-Fi-based iPhone and iPad app looks great and is easy to use.

Dated menu graphics. Networking via wired Ethernet only. Amplifier sound slightly trails the competition. No native Pandora or SiriusXM support.

Performance, AirPlay, and Conclusions Sonically, the RX-V473 is a solid performer. It had no problem driving a set of Energy Take Classic 5.1 ($399, 4 stars) speakers to deafening levels in our testing lab. That said, the quality of the sound was ever...

Yamaha RX-V473

An affordable AirPlay-equipped AV receiver.

Detailed sound with decent grunt ; AirPlay and internet radio ; Sleek black design

Basic looking menu system ; Couldn’t stream from Windows Media Player ; Cluttered remote

They’re joined by two sets of component video inputs and one output; four composite video inputs and two outputs; three digital audio inputs (two optical, two coaxial); three analogue stereo inputs and one output; a subwoofer pre-out; an Ethernet port...
