Philips Hue BR30 review

Philips' new BR30 downlights offer the same awesome features as the original A19 bulbs, yet they draw less power, and pump out more lumens per watt.

Philips Hue's outdoor HomeKit sensor eyeballs your smart home

This weather-ready outdoor sensor from Philips Hue tracks motion, temperature and ambient light, and can trigger your lights and gadgets accordingly.

Hue's Outdoor Sensor works with Apple HomeKit, and it's actually three sensors in one -- motion, temperature and ambient light. The app's sensitivity controls are the best I've seen for a device like this, with accurate real-time feedback that makes it...

The Hue app doesn't currently do anything with those temperature readings, and it forces you to go into the settings to see any information about the sensor at all. Also, our lights didn't always jump to the correct scene when motion was detected.

This accessory is a decent and reasonably priced add-on for existing Philips Hue households -- especially if you're interested in Hue's new lineup of outdoor lights.

I'm not sure who this Hue is for

It's strange, it's expensive, and it would look out of place in most homes. What's the point of this thing?

The Philips Hue Signe fixtures are quite unique and eye-catching, and they work with all of the usual Philips Hue partners -- Alexa, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT, the Google Assistant, etc.

Neither fixture puts out a wide enough pool of light, nor can they put out more than one color at a time.

Both of Hue's new Signe fixtures are much too niche -- and much too expensive -- for us to recommend.

Philips Hue White LED Starter Kit review: Philips Hue sans colors? Surprisingly great

It's counterintuitive, but the white-light-only Philips Hue bulbs represent serious smart-home value thanks to the power of the Philips Hue platform.

The plain, vanilla version of Philips Hue's smart LEDs don't change colors, but they do enjoy all of the benefits of Hue's well-connected platform. They're also bright, good looking bulbs with easy-to-use smarts, and you can add extras to your setup...

At $70, the two-bulb starter kit still comes with a fair share of sticker shock.

Philips Hue is one of the best-developed DIY smart-home platforms money can buy, and this white-light starter kit is your most affordable entry point. It's practically a must-buy if you're serious about smart lighting.

Philips Hue White LED Starter Kit

Fortunately, that color-changing kit isn't your only option. For $70, Philips also sells a starter kit with that same Hue Bridge and a pair of plain, soft white smart bulbs. They won't change colors at all, but you can still automate them to turn on...

Philips Hue White Ambiance

The Philips Hue White Ambiance is a smart bulb that shifts color temperatures across the white spectrum, but you can get the same basic features for half the price with the Hue White.

Easy setup. Lots of features and support. Adjustable color temperatures in white spectrum.

Not that bright. White only. Requires a hub.

Conclusions The Philips Hue White Ambiance is a worthwhile consideration if you're already part of the Philips Hue family, and you want to add mood lighting to your house. But if you want more affordable and brighter light for every room in your home,...

Philips Hue White Ambiance

The Philips Hue White Ambiance LEDs aim to change all of that. They won't put out light in pink, purple, or green like other Hue bulbs, but they will shift color temperatures within that white-light spectrum: warm, candle-like tones at one end and...

The Hue White Ambiance LEDs are reliable and fairly easy to set up and use. Hue's wide compatibility with third-parties means that you'll be able to use them with a variety of different platforms, including Nest, SmartThings, Alexa and Apple HomeKit.

Siri doesn't recognize the white light spectrum yet, so you can't ask her to change the tone of your lights without pre-programming a scene first. Also, the bulbs aren't as bright as advertised.

The White Ambiance LEDs fill in a gap in the Philips Hue family of smart bulbs, but they didn't outperform color-tunable LEDs from Lifx and Stack. They're really only worth it if you're already committed to Hue, or to HomeKit.
