While probably not worth the upgrade for Dropcam Pro owners, Nest's first security camera is great option for first-time home monitors.

Sleek, sturdy construction ; Accurate motion detection ; Easy-to-use app

This security cam watches over things when you can't

Nest's $200 Dropcam Pro replacement is pretty awesome, but it doesn't offer enough extras to warrant an immediate upgrade.

Nest Cam's high-resolution video (1080p), magnetic base, pivoting stand and updated app make this DIY device an improvement over Dropcam Pro -- and many other DIY cameras.

Like Dropcam Pro, Nest Cam is still just a webcam at heart. While it does offer security features like opt-in motion and sound alerts, they aren't especially useful since you can only receive one notification every 30 minutes.

Given that Nest Cam and Dropcam Pro are pretty similar, it doesn't make a lot of sense for existing users to replace their Pro. But, budding DIYers searching for a high-res live streaming camera really can't beat Nest Cam.

Review: Google Nest Cam | Surveillance Camera With Critical Sense Google Nest Cam

Google Nest Cam is literally a pretty intelligent surveillance camera that knows its owner and knows when he or she needs to be disturbed.

Well-functioning AI that can recognize people, animals and vehicles. Does not require subscription.

The microphone is sensitive to wind noise. Relatively expensive. For Google Home/Google Nest only.

Google Nest Cam is not a cheap camera, but the well-functioning artificial intelligence fully offsets the extra price compared to e.g. Arlo Essential Indoor Camera.

As the successor to Dropcam, the Nest Cam Indoor continues to set the standard for wireless home security cameras.

Great for live viewing and high quality video, but little video history available without a subscription

Great video quality, smooth real time viewing, field leading monitoring services available

Very limited without a subscription

The Nest Cam Indoor is the best security camera for real time viewing. If you're willing to pay for a subscription it is also one of the best overall cameras, slightly behind the that offer advanced facial recognition.
