Sony LF-S50G smart speaker review: A solid Google Home alternative

Sony's smart speaker sounds better than a lot of the competition, but gesture controls need some fine-tuning.

Decent sound quality ; Reliable voice control ; Clock interface ; Works well with Chromecast devices ; Removable cover for easy cleaning

Gesture control can be frustrating ; Limited bass/low-end range ; Google Assistant still has limitations

Sony LF-S50G

Sony's LF-S50G is a smart speaker powered by Google Assistant that comes packed with useful features and doesn't skimp on audio quality.

Google Assistant support. High-quality audio. Gesture controls. Splash-resistant build.

Unoriginal design.

Sony's LF-S50G speaker will be available in October for $199.99. We're looking forward to seeing how it stacks up against the Google Home in real-world testing, not to mention Amazon's Alexa-powered lineup, and Apple's HomePod when it comes out later...

Sony's new voice-enabled speaker cheaper than Apple's HomePod

The LF-S50G Wireless Speaker with Google Assistant resembles Apple's upcoming speaker, but costs $150 less.

Sony LF-S50G Review: A Good Google Home Alternative

Sony's LF-S50G is an interesting alternative to the Google Home. It delivers better sound and a few useful features that the Home doesn't, like a clock and water resistance. However, its gesture controls were too inconsistent.

Splash resistant ; Time displays on front ; Gets very loud

Can't make phone calls ; Gesture controls don't work well

The Sony LF-S50G brings Google Assistant to your home with an elegant style and includes some useful features.

Sony speaker LF-S50G review: a real rival to Google Home?

You may try to resist but smart speakers will conquer your home. Sony is placing a serious bet to fill every corner of your home with music, especially places where there are usually liquids. The Sony LF-S50G is a 360º speaker with all the power of...

360º sounds with good volume ; Versatile voice recognition ; Compatible with Google Home ; IPX3 (splashproof) ; Bluetooth pairing with NFC ; Clock

Gesture control needs to improve ; Sound could be better

The Sony LF-S50G speaker is a great alternative to the traditional Google Home. It has better sound quality and is somewhat more versatile. The Bluetooth connection works quite well and opens the field to more devices that have nothing to do with our...

Sony LF-S50G review

Sony's LF-S50G struggles to match its main rivals in the sound department.

Attractive, splashproof design ; Google Assistant is great ; Multi-room functionality

Tiring sound is out of its depth at this price ; Hit-and-miss gesture controls

Sonos One currently sets the bar at this level, and the LF-S50G struggles to match it

Sony LF-S50G Smart Speaker with Google Assistant review

Sony's answer to Google Home is a tough value proposition

Gets loud ; Excellent voice recognition ; Splash-proof

Can’t make calls (yet) ; Average sound quality ; Rubbish gesture controls

In isolation, the Sony LF-S50G is a very good smart speaker. It’s great at picking up voice commands, sounds good and features a handy LED clock. However, compared to the competition, the Sony is a poor value as other speakers in its price range...

Sony LF-S50G speaker preview: Google Assistant in smart, subtle form

They are all at it. Sony is one of the latest companies to announce a smart home speaker with Google Assistant built-in, joining the likes of Panasonic

The Sony LF-S50G speaker has a lovely design. It's small, it's subtle and based on our experience with it, it appears to manage to produce a decent sound from its compact body.

Sony LF-S50G review: Hands on with the smart Bluetooth speaker

The small Bluetooth speaker has an LED display, Google Assistant and good sound quality

Upon first impressions, the Sony LF-S50G offers a good alternative to the Home and Echo devices. With Google Assistant built in, the Sony offers superior sound at a more premium price. The addition of a display is nice to see, and can be handy for...
