Magellan Echo review

For runners and cyclists living in Apple's iOS ecosystem, the Magellan Echo is a solid option that covers both bases.

There is no doubt about it: Smartwatches are coming. For runners and cyclists living in Apple’s iOS ecosystem, the Magellan Echo is a solid option that covers both bases. It would even work well for hiking. However, the watch’s susceptibility to water...

Magellan Echo

Magellan's Echo smart sports watch offers a good value for a neat device that borrows some features from smartwatches. You still need to fire up an app to track your run, bicycle ride, or even golf game, but you can control the app that's doing the...

Borrows smartwatch concepts for a sports watch. Bluetooth functionality lets you control smartphone fitness apps. Excellent battery conservation features. Tracks miles, time, pace, cadence, and heart rate (with a connected heart rate monitor). Good value.

Chunky shape. Works with iOS only at the moment. Requires carrying a smartphone (limited to stopwatch functionality without phone).

On the other hand, if you're in the market for a device that's more of a daily step-counter with some extra abilities to track activities (but not a more advanced sports watch with pace, cadence, etc.), our Editors' Choice is the Basis Carbon Steel...

Magellan Echo In-Depth Review

This past summer Magellan a running-focused smart watch. And 10 days ago, they became the first company to actually ship said type of watch. While there have been many smart watches (especially as of late), and many running watches, this marks what I...

– A blank slate for developers to write cool/interesting/innovative apps ; – Tons of customization possible, far more configuration options than similar priced GPS units ; – GPS accuracy of the tested apps appears to be quite good, far better than I...

– Depends 100% on your phone being near you (and today, that’s an iPhone) ; – No Vibrate ; functionality ; – 3rd parties haven’t really done much ‘increda-cool’ with it yet

Magellan Echo smart running watch review

Wearable technology gets sporty

Simple and functional design ; Interfaces well with fitness apps

Uses button battery ; No Android support

The Magellan Echo may not stand out as a watch or a fitness tracker, but the device’s real value is in how it combines these features into a single, functional package.

Magellan Echo

The smart running watch take data to the wrist, but lacks killer built-in features.

Long battery life ; Real-time data syncing ; Light and comfortable design

Only four third party apps supported ; Works best with iPhone ; Limited built-in watch features

Currently there’s five apps that work with the Magellan Echo; Strava, MapMyRun, Wahoo Fitness and iSmoothRun. All are free and have premium options to get additional features. Magellan has made the developer platform open so each app can customize what...

Magellan Echo review

Running watches are fast becoming two a penny. Magellan, best known as GPS company, is also entering the ever-busying market with its Echo smartwatch. There is a huge amounts of potential in the Echo. It is such a simple yet "open" device: pair it up...

Light, easy to use, clear display, powered by a watch battery that lasts for months, works with iPhone (Android promised in the future)

Very basic - almost looks like a toy, only works with a handful of apps, needs to sync with phone to have much value, no Android (just yet)

There is a huge amounts of potential in the Echo. It is such a simple yet "open" device: pair it up with your iPhone and the right app - it does need more, though, we must say - and it delivers a clean, useful experience.
