Sony SmartWatch 2 review: a fair effort that still hasn't cracked it

We really wanted Sony to lead the way with the SmartWatch 2, but some buggy software and poor app choices keep this from being the de facto option.

Well-built ; Easy to use ; Large number of apps

Some software issues ; Average battery life

At $200, the SmartWatch 2 is cheaper than its most obvious competitor, the Galaxy Gear, which costs $100 more. That's quite a difference. Of course, the Galaxy Gear has some notable hardware features that help it stand apart --namely, a camera, speaker...

Fresh software makes the Sony SmartWatch better

Powered by Android, the Sony SmartWatch had plenty of bugs when it first launched. Refreshed with new software, the device now feels almost ready for prime time.

The ; draws the eye with its sleek, stylish looks. It also offers a wide range of wireless functions notifications, call handling, and music control made possible by a Bluetooth smartphone connection.

The Sony SmartWatch needs an Android smartphone connection to function or even keep the time, it isn't compatible with iOS, and its display can't be read in sunlight. It needs to be charged daily.

The Sony SmartWatch enters the realm of usability thanks to recent software updates, but it's still more smartphone accessory than solid standalone timepiece.

Sony SmartWatch review

The Sony SmartWatch is an intriguing device — a secondary display for your Android-powered handset that provides quick access to notifications from select apps and services on your phone. It's also...

Better looking than most smart watches ; Definite geek chic factor ; Comfortable ; Works seamlessly with a recommended handset ; Music controls are a nice touch

Software is overly complex to set up ; No guarantee of future compatibility ; Apps are of limited use ; Initially confusing ; Expensive

A neat idea, but it's tough to escape the novelty value

Sony SmartWatch

The Sony SmartWatch is the best "geek watch" so far, but it still doesn't quite break through to the mainstream.

Light, handsome, and well-designed. Touch screen. An open platform.

Dim screen. Fiddly Bluetooth connection. Days, not weeks, of battery life.

Conclusions The SmartWatch is, for now, unique in the market as a stylish, consumer-centered tech watch. The MotoActv is bigger, more expensive, and bulkier, and very fitness-focused. The WIMM One watch, which also runs a full version of Android, is...
