Sony's SRS-BTX500: One slick portable Bluetooth speaker

While fairly pricey at just under $300, the Sony SRS-BTX500 more than holds its own against the top premium portable Bluetooth speakers.

The ; is a sleekly designed Bluetooth wireless speaker that offers impressive sound for its size, and has a built-in rechargeable battery for on-the-go use, and speakerphone capabilities. A carrying case is included and there's a USB port for charging...

The speaker's fairly expensive and the battery life is OK but not great.

A worthy peer to speakers by Bose and Jawbone, the Sony SRS-BTX500 is one of the best premium portable Bluetooth speakers you can buy.

Sony SRS-BTX500 Premium Bluetooth Wireless Speaker review

Sony's 2013 portable Bluetooth wireless speaker offerings are pretty varied. At the low end -- or entry level, as companies prefer to describe it -- you have the ball-style SRS-BTV5 ($69). Then there's the purse-style SRS-BTM8 , which retails for $99....

Sony SRS-BTX500

The Wirecutter describes the design as "classy but not flashy": an understated look that will blend into most home interiors. For a portable speaker, though, it's a bit on the heavy side, at 4.5 pounds. CNET says it's "probably not something you want...

Very good sound quality, Easy Bluetooth pairing, Speakerphone function, Clean, sleek design

So-so battery life, A bit heavy

Sony SRS-BTX500 Bluetooth Wireless SpeakerReview

This slick little box can rock your Bluetooth and NFC devices from the tabletop or on the road.

That said, it certainly holds its own -- in terms of sound quality and functionality -- in a really crowded market. It's one of the best-sounding portable speakers we've seen (and heard). I'm not talking just room to room. This thing would be just as...

Sony SRS-BTX500 review

Should you make space in your luggage for the Sony SRS-BTX500 wireless speaker?

Premium design ; Room-filling audio ; USB charging

Poor battery life ; Price ; It's bulky

Sony SRS-BTX500

There's plenty to like about this compact portable speaker, but there are more talented alternatives available

Clear and sharply defined sound ; Punchy rhythm and agile timing ; Solid, weighty character ; Good build and finish

Rivals sound more open and detailed ; Bright edge to the sound

So, where does that leave the SRS-BTX500? WOn the one hand, we like the convenience and portability but, despite that wonderfully clean sound and snappy timing, the Sony just doesn’t have the levels of emotion and subtle depth to compete with its rivals.

Sony SRS-BTX500 bluetooth speaker review

Bluetooth speakers are the new headphones. We don't mean literally, and please don't start taking them on the bus with you, but they are an area where lots of companies see lots of chances to make money. And like headphones, these aren't £50...

Sounds amazing, looks great, built-in battery, NFC for Bluetooth pairing is a dream come true, simple to use, loud

Easy to leave on and thus drain the battery

There can't be much argument that nearly £300 for a portable Bluetooth speaker is a lot of cash. But that said, the sound quality from this Sony is nothing short of amazing. It's also a fantastic speakerphone and we think it looks ace too.
