Amazon Fire HD 6 review: great value for a $99 tablet

Here's a question: How did Amazon know it was time to make a $99 tablet? Because of focus groups? Its ace marketing department? Close: user reviews. Let'

Sharp screen ; Long battery life ; Useful features such as family sharing and the option to add six user accounts ; Great overall value for the price

Heavy for its size, cheap build quality ; Limited built-in storage, no microSD slot ; Some performance lags ; Doesn't include Amazon's Mayday live support feature

With long battery life, a sharp screen and some useful software features, the HD 6 offers impressive value for the money. It's an excellent choice for children, and anyone else looking for a small-screen tablet on a budget.

Amazon Fire HD 6 review

Amazon's Fire HD 6 looks like the kind of tablet you'd give a kid for Christmas, and at $100, it's the best bargain you'll find.

At just $100, the Fire HD 6 is a true bargain and it’s not pretending to be anything other than what it is: a cheap and chipper tablet. If you’ve got a grandma or a 7-year-old who’s been nagging you for a tablet, this little guy is inexpensive and...

Amazon Fire HD 6 Kids Edition

The Amazon Fire HD 6 Kids Edition is best understood as a simple container for Amazon's FreeTime subscription kids' books and videos. One that's covered by a no-questions-asked two-year warranty.

Two year, no-questions-asked warranty. Rugged case. Huge amount of subscription kids' content included, especially from Nickelodeon.

Two-page book spreads are too small to be readable. Performance can be laggy. Very limited internal storage. Lacks Amazon's Mayday help feature.

There's a little tide pool full of tablets designed specially for kids: Fuhu and Kurio are the most reliable names in the mix. All of them deliver highly customized Android tablets with severe parental controls and special, kid-friendly app stores. You...

Amazon Fire HD 6 ( white, 16GB)

In comparison to its 7-inch counterpart, the Fire HD 6 sports a more compact build that's easier for travel and commuting, not to mention lighter on your wallet. The specs on the 6-inch tablet aren't the most cutting edge, but for a rock-bottom price,...

The Amazon Fire HD 6 starts at an affordable $99. Its small size makes it extremely portable and easy to use in one hand. Performance is smooth and its OS features a variety of family-friendly functions.

The plastic construction feels cheap and girthy. It lacks Amazon's Mayday instant customer-service feature as well as the Google Play store. The free space on the 8GB model fills up quickly.

The smooth performing and feature-filled Amazon Fire HD 6 is unrivaled in the bargain tablet category.

Amazon Fire HD 6 review

The Amazon Fire HD 6 turns the budget tablet category on its head. Starting at only $99 for an 8GB model, the 6-inch slate rocks a sharp IPS screen, performs smoothly, and offers a feature-filled, user-friendly operating system -- and that's more than...

Amazon Fire HD 6

The Amazon Fire HD 6 is a well-built, reliable small-screen tablet for under $100, but it really suffers from a lack of storage.

Solid. build quality. Bright, sharp screen. Good size for reading. Tons of Amazon streaming content.

Very little internal storage, with no memory card slot. Sometimes laggy. Mediocre battery life. Lacks Mayday button for instant help.

I'm disappointed to see that the HD 6 lacks Mayday, Amazon's customer-service app. During my review, I wanted to use Mayday three times, mostly to find things buried in the settings. The basic on-device help didn't help, and I had to do Web searches...

Amazon Fire HD 6 Review

With the Fire HD 6 we see Amazon approach the standard paperback book size device. But this device is not aimed at reading alone, it's aimed at every kind of Amazon-based media. It is, after all, an Amazon-centric device, and therefor should be...

The Fire HD 6 is a fun little device. If you’re excited about getting the best of the best in Amazon, this isn’t it – this is the budget model. This is the device that’ll cost you $99 or $119 USD depending on your choice of storage size. This is the...

Fire HD 6 Review

The Fire HD 6 is the first 6-inch tablet that Amazon or any other major company has released. There's also a 7-inch model, the Fire HD 7. This review focuses on the 6-inch model specifically but it can be used as reference for the 7-inch version too...

Good value for the price in terms of overall hardware and specs, plus the build quality feels solid ; Small and portable, easy to hold and operate one-handed ; Much more versatile than an E Ink Kindle, while still offering most of the same Kindle...

Like all Fire tablets, you are forced to use Amazon's custom interface that directs all aspects of the device to Amazon to buy more stuff, plus the software is more basic and much less customizable than other Android tablets ; Doesn't support Google...

The Fire HD 6 is a surprisingly nice tablet for $99. It has a high resolution screen, front and rear cameras, Bluetooth, a zippy quad-core processor, and a respectable 8-hour battery life. Most tablets under $100 have low resolution screens and weak...
