Apple iPad review (2018): A little better, a little less competition

Once again, Apple has squeezed a bunch of components from past iOS devices -- the processor from the iPhone 7, the Pencil-friendly touch sensor from the first iPad Pro -- into a familiar body. While that might not sound terribly exciting, it all comes...

Great performance for the price ; Apple Pencil support ; Lots of excellent tablet apps

Classic design is getting old ; Still thicker than other iPads ; May be pricey for schools

Chris is Engadget's senior mobile editor and moonlights as a professional moment ruiner. His early years were spent taking apart Sega consoles and writing awful fan fiction. That passion for electronics and words would eventually lead him to covering...

Apple iPad (2018) hands-on preview

Apple's new iPad is more powerful and brings Pencil support, and a bevy of software initiatives and app improvements show emphasis on education.

Lots of education-focused initiatives ; Good hardware, slick software ; Affordable ; More control for teachers ; Support for Pencil

Design hasn’t changed

The iPad for everyone

There isn't much new about Apple's newest entry-level iPad. But it's a better value than ever.

The 2018 entry-level iPad supports the Apple Pencil for art work and annotation, and adds a faster A10 processor. iOS continues to offer the best overall selection of free and paid apps on affordable tablets.

Lacks the bigger, better screen, quad speakers and Smart Connector found on pricier iPad Pros. The Pencil, case and keyboard add-ons will bring the price up to laptop level.

The 2018 entry-level iPad doesn't add much, but it makes an already excellent tablet a better buy than ever.

Apple iPad (2018)

The same price as last year's model but now with Apple Pencil support, the sixth-generation iPad is the best midrange tablet choice for most people. But it's still less practical than Chromebooks for most schools.

Terrific performance for the price. Elegant, high-quality apps. Supports Apple Pencil.

Neither rugged nor waterproof. Keyboard and Pencil accessories increase the price.

Who's buying this iPad? If you're a traditional tablet user looking to play games, watch or create videos, or draw, this iPad is a worthy upgrade over the previous model. It's a terrific family companion and more capable than any Android or Windows...

Apple iPad (2018) Review

The 6th generation iPad – also known as the 2018-edition or the new 9.7-inch iPad – follows its predecessor in familiar fashion with an irresistible starting price of $329 for consumers. But given the stagnant nature of the tablet market, can the new...

Solid build quality for its price ; Exceptional processing performance ; Supports Apple Pencil ; Diverse app ecosystem ; Long battery life ; Great bang for the buck deal at $329

Camera's performance is predictably poor under low light ; Side-by-side view doesn't support two third-party apps ; Obnoxiously long battery recharge time

Apple iPad (2018) review: The best gets even better

Four years ago, my daughter would come home from school and tell me all about the games and applications she used at school that day. Apps that taught her numbers and letters, then later math and how to read. As my two younger kids started going to...

Apple Pencil support ; The price is right ; Solid performance and battery life

Lack of Smart Connector is disappointing

Review: 2018 iPad with Apple Pencil support might replace your iPad Pro

Apple is aiming at the educational market with the new 2018 sixth generation iPad, but the addition of Apple Pencil support has generated a lot of commercial interest in the device. It is obviously superior to the popular iPad 2, but will it replace...

Apple iPad (2018) review: Still outperforms every Android tablet

Apple has only itself to blame for this: the sixth generation of the iPad is a cheap iPad, or at least cheap by Apple's standards. You get the sense that it was cheaply produced around almost every corner, and yet Apple has still produced an enormously...

Strong performance ; High-quality apps

Display isn't exceptional ; Slow fingerprint reader

Apple advertises the iPad as a computer. The iPad’s performance values don’t make this sound completely absurd. The device is mobile, the battery lasts long and the app universe is impressive in terms of its quality and larger selection.

iPad 2018 9.7-inch Review | Trusted Reviews

The iPad 2018 packs the much of the goodness of the Pro at half the price. It also works as a low cost laptop, if you but a keyboard case.

Great value ; Slim and light, yet powerful ; Apple Pencil compatible ; iOS is the best tablet operating system

Reflective screen ; Average rear camera

The new iPad is an iPad Pro on a budget. You get many of the same features for a fraction of the price, and that makes it hugely compelling.
