HP Slate 7 review: HP's budget Android tablet is less of a hit, more of a miss

It's no secret that HP has struggled when it comes to tablets. The company has faced (and crashed into) its share of mobile device hurdles in recent

Sturdy design ; Inexpensive

Washed-out, low-res display ; Latency and stuttering during routine tasks ; Disappointing battery life

HP is dipping its toe back into the tablet market with the budget-friendly Slate 7, but the tablet's underperforming processor and lackluster display leave much to be desired.

HP Slate 7 Review

For $170 you could buy the HP Slate 7, but it has drawbacks. You could spend $30 more and get a tablet that better balances cost and value.

There aren’t many Android tablets under $200 worth your time. There’s a certain threshold to inexpensive slates – stay above it and value balances out with price and performance, dip below and you might as well have just flushed that money down a...

HP gives an extra inch to its phablet for the Slate 7 VoiceTab

HP decides you might as well leave the phone features in your 7-inch phablet as it launches the Slate 7 VoiceTab in Europe.

HP Slate 7

The HP Slate 7 is an Android tablet that combines good looks with speedy performance, but its display just isn't up to snuff.

Inexpensive. Attractive, sturdy design. Near stock Android, with unobtrusive customizations. MicroSD card slot. Solid performance.

Lower-resolution display than competitors. Mediocre battery life.

Conclusions HP has a laudable effort in the Slate 7, but it just doesn't really offer many reasons to choose it over a tablet like the Nexus 7. There are a few key areas where the Slate 7 just isn't up to snuff—namely the lower resolution screen and...

The HP Slate 7 is undone by missing features and a dull screen

Sure, the HP Slate 7 costs only $170. But when a much better tablet is only $30 away, that price loses its appeal. Fast.

The ; is a durable 7-inch tablet, includes an expandable storage option, and has good gaming performance. Beats Audio effectively enhances bass-heavy music through headphones or earbuds.

The screen’s resolution is eye-squintingly low, large apps take a long time to load, and its cameras produce washed-out, dull-looking shots. Also, there’s no GPS, and Android 4.1.1 can feel a bit archaic compared with newer versions of the OS.

The HP Slate 7 strips out way too much to make its low price, and what's left can't compare to the Nexus 7's offerings.

HP Slate 7 review

At $170, you'd expect the HP Slate 7 to be stripped of a few features; however, HP takes this a bit too far. The Slate 7 includes only 8GB of storage, and it has no gyroscope, no GPS hardware, poor camera quality, a slightly (but significantly) older...

Review HP Slate 7 Tablet

Affordable entertainer. HP's seven-inch Slate 7 tablet brags to be an able companion for all multimedia situations and is partly available for far below 150 Euros (~$195) despite this versatility claim. We took the manufacturer at its word and tested...

Solid casing, Bright screen, High viewing angle stability, Latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean version, Decent application and gaming performance, Low purchase price, The good performance despite the budget price. The Rockchip RK3066 SoC delivers enough...

No GPS module, Awful webcam, Weak primary camera, 12 month warranty, A tablet that boasts multimedia use should feature better camera modules. The webcam is virtually useless although the 3 megapixel primary camera shoots feasible pictures

HP Slate 7 Review

HP 's first go-around with a tablet didn't actually go so well. The webOS-based TouchPad didn't last long and was quickly discontinued. However, the company is back with another slate, only this time it's running the more widely-adopted Android...

In the end, the HP Slate 7 is just an OK tablet, and it would be a good option for casual users who don’t need the greatest device, but want something just to play around on. It’s low $169 price tag is definitely something to keep in mind, but we’d...

HP Slate 7 Extreme Quick Review: Not All Tegra Note Devices Are Created Equal

All in all, I like the HP Slate 7 Extreme more than EVGA's Tegra Note 7, despite the fact that it has yet to receive the update to Android 4.3. The build quality is better, the display is better (even if only marginally), and I prefer the overall...
