Microsoft Surface Pro 2 review: a tablet that works best as a laptop

The new Surface Pro is more viable as a laptop replacement, but it hasn't made much progress as a standalone tablet. Ultimately, it's at its best in laptop mode, but it's still not always as comfortable to use as a proper Ultrabook.

Attractive, well-built hardware ; Great display ; Fast performance, improved battery life ; More comfortable to use in the lap

Still heavy as a standalone tablet ; Typing experience hasn't improved much

When it came time to hand down a verdict on the first Surface Pro, we ultimately decided that, nice as it was, it felt compromised as both a laptop and a tablet. We wouldn't go so far as to say the Surface Pro 2 addresses all of the original's...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 reviewed: Small tweaks for a big tablet

This slate sequel has better battery life and performance, but the thick body feels more like a Surface Pro 1.5.

The ; is a faster, longer-battery-life version of the original model, upgraded with a current-gen Haswell processor. The keyboard cover is also improved with backlit keys, and is among the best tablet accessories ever devised.

The Surface Pro 2 remains stubbornly thick and heavy compared with some sleeker competitors. The base 64GB version may leave you starved for storage, and the keyboard cover, practically required, should be included instead of sold separately.

Microsoft's subtly updated Windows 8.1 tablet feels more like Surface Pro 1.5 -- improved battery life and better accessories make it a worthwhile (albeit pricey) laptop replacement, but it's still not an iPad-level category killer.

Microsoft Surface Pro 2

The Surface Pro 2 is Microsoft's updated slate tablet that's improved in every performance vector. It packs ultrabook-class components into an innovative form factor with a sturdy chassis. Add in a wide range of useful accessories, and the Surface Pro...

Ultrabook components. Full 1080p HD display. 10-finger touch screen. Improved kickstand and performance. Comes with pressure-sensitive stylus. Works with Surface covers and accessories. Truly Windows-compatible.

Keyboard cover is optional. Only one USB 3.0 port. Kickstand still digs into your legs.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is a worthy follow up to our former Editors' Choice, the Microsoft Surface Windows 8 Pro. It improves performance and battery life, while keeping the form factor and wide accessory catalog the first-gen Surface Pro had going...

Surface Pro 2 review: This is the Windows tablet you're looking for

Take a Haswell CPU and better integrated graphics. Add improved Touch and Type Covers. Suddenly, Microsoft's next-gen tablet is the best hybrid around.

Clearly, Microsoft has lots of refinement left to do. But despite all the Surface Pro 2’s flaws, there’s something alluring about it. No other touchscreen laptop or convertible device plays the hybrid game as well as the Surface Pro 2 does. The...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 review

I've been using the Surface Pro ever since it came out, but as much as I want to I've never been able to use it as my laptop replacement. It's powerful and impressive, but it's just too limited as...

A super fast Windows PC ; Improved battery life ; Combination of touch, keyboard, mouse, and pen

Heavy and thick for a tablet ; Not perfect on your lap for a laptop ; Lack of apps for tablet use

Microsoft understands the compromises, but hasn't fixed them yet

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 review

Just in time for Microsoft's Windows 8.1 operating system update, the company's flagship Surface tablet line is also getting a makeover. Or in the case of the $899 Surface Pro 2, it's more of a makeunder -- there's no flashy physical redesign, as with...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Review

When Microsoft introduced its first Surface devices last year, it did so in a staggered fashion. Surface RT showed up first, then four months later Surface Pro went on sale. Despite sharing a lot of the same DNA, the response to Surface Pro was much...

What I was hoping for this round was an even thinner/lighter chassis, but it looks like we’ll have to wait another year for that. Battery life is still not up to snuff with traditional ARM based tablets, and Surface Pro 2 seems to pay more of a penalty...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Review: Better Than Expected

Most people weren't impressed by the original Microsoft Surface and Windows RT, but keep reading to find out why the newest Surface is "a notebook in a tablet's body."

Review Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Tablet

Cautious evolution. Microsoft's second iteration of the Surface Pro aims at eradicating its predecessor's biggest flaws while at the same time staying true to its original concept. We have done some extensive testing to find out whether this powerful...

Battery Life; Sheer Performance; Versatility; True digitizer pen; Display; Noise emissions; Build quality; Integrated kickstand; Magnetic power connector; Power adapter with integrated USB charging functionality

Weight; Camera resolution; Heat emissions (under full load); Price; Expensive accessories; Somewhat reduced display sharpness when scaled up

Direct competition is nowhere to be found at the time of writing. The other contestants are either not powerful enough, lack the digitizer functionality of the Surface Pro 2, ship without full Windows 8.1 or offer a different form factor. Still,...

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 Review

In less than 9 short months, the Microsoft's Surface Pro Windows 8 tablet is already being brushed aside by its successor in the Microsoft Surface Pro 2. Armed with the usual set of hardware upgrades and an updated Windows 8.1 experience, the Surface...

Additional kickstand angle ; Long battery life ; Updated Windows 8.1 experience ; Speedy performance

Hefty size and weight for a tablet ; Pricey cost ; Cameras are not good ; Stylus can easily be misplaced/lost

It’s really tough to say what we think about the Microsoft Surface Pro 2. On one hand, it’s a powerful computing machine that would run circles around most of the flagship tablets out there, but on the other, we can’t help but think about how it’s...
