Surface Pro 6 review: Still the best 2-in-1 PC

The Surface Pro 6 is the complete tablet PC package: It's fast, light and has a great keyboard cover. But that was also true of last year's model. And it's facing stiffer competition this year from the Surface Go.

The fastest Surface yet ; Screen is a big improvement ; Still the best tablet keyboard around ; Battery life is better than before ; Black case option is a nice change of pace

No major design changes ; Performance hasn’t changed much since last year

Microsoft Surface Pro 6

With a modest speed boost and a new color choice, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 may not have changed much from the previous iteration, but what we loved about this 2-in-1 convertible then, we still love now.

Speedy new 8th Generation Intel processor. Good battery life. Premium feel. Sleek all-black color option. Brilliant display. Well-implemented kickstand.

Minimal changes from previous model. As ever, keyboard sold separately. Not ideal for in-lap use. Somewhat restrictive configuration combinations. Limited ports.

Bottom Line: With a modest speed boost and a new color choice, the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 may not have changed much from the previous iteration, but what we loved about this 2-in-1 convertible then, we still love now.

Surface Pro 6 review: Racing ahead of last year's model

Microsoft's Surface Pro 6 gets even faster, but be ready to pay for must-have extras.

The Surface Pro 6's jump to new quad-core processors pays off in big performance gains. The new black color option looks cool. Still the best kickstand and keyboard for Windows tablets.

Be ready to shell out extra for the keyboard cover, stylus and even for the new matte black design. CPU and color aside, it's a very minimal upgrade over the previous version.

The latest Surface Pro tablet doesn't make any radical design changes, but the performance jump makes it viable as a mainstream performance laptop replacement.

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 review: a familiar bet

Surface Pro is still the 2-in-1 to beat

Quad-core performance inside a lightweight tablet ; Mostly silent operation ; Matte black finish

Still no USB-C ports ; Dated design ; Lapability still not ideal

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 review: Microsoft adds quad-core power to its tried-and-true tablet

Microsoft's latest Surface Pro 6 tablet looks the same as its predecessors, though a new 8th-generation Core chip adds enough of a punch to consider upgrading.

Quad-core 8th-gen Core chip adds a performance bump ; Core i5 model does away with the fan ; Battery life improves somewhat

External chassis is essentially unchanged...again ; Step down in GPU power from previous model ; Confusing mix of configurations to choose from on Microsoft site

The Surface Pro 6 may have changed little on the outside, but inside, Microsoft claims the new 8th-gen processor makes it 67 percent faster than the Surface Pro (2017). That’s a little complicated for us to measure. While the Surface Pro (2017) used...

Still no USB-C/Thunderbolt ports; 256GB SSD is a bit sluggish ; The Surface Pro 6's significantly longer battery life and fast 8th-gen Intel processor make this the Windows 2-in-1 to beat.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 6 Review: More Than A Color

Microsoft is in a bit of a unique place in the PC space compared to other manufacturers. Other than Apple, Microsoft is the only company that controls both the hardware and software sides, and when the Surface lineup launched way back in 2012,...

Microsoft’s Surface lineup has always been about a premium device, and to showcase their software, and the Surface Pro 6 delivers on that front. Despite the somewhat questionable update cadence, and even the lack of USB-C, the changes that are here are...

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (2018) (Core i7, 512GB, 16GB) Convertible Review

Full power with four cores. Microsoft has updated to the Surface Pro series with quad-core Kaby Lake Refresh processors, but how well will these chips cope within an 8.5-mm thick tablet? Will these more powerful processors affect the battery life, and...

laptop-like performance ; fan noise is quiet under load ; full working day’s battery life ; impressive input devices for a convertible ; well-built ; contemporary design ; good cameras ; Windows Hello support ; decent microphone ; bright display ; high...

no USB Type-C ; Signature Type Cover (2017) remains an additional purchase ; as does the Surface Pen (2017) ; expensive

New tricks in an old design? The Surface Pro 6 looks the same as its predecessors save for its new black colour option. The device is a slim, high-quality and robust tablet case that is easy to hold and weighs a comparatively svelte 786 g (~1.7 lb)....

Surface Pro 6 review

Can the latest Surface Pro keep pace with the iPad Pro and laptop rivals like the MacBook Air?

Beautiful display ; Long battery life ; Excellent performance

Should replace ports with USB-C ; Not the latest Intel processor ; Need to buy accessories separately

Microsoft hasn’t improved this year’s Surface Pro a great deal, but this is still the best 2-in-1 around. The question is whether you need a 2-in-1 or not; will you use it as a tablet? For many, a laptop remains a better option.
