Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet review: A top-tier slate with a familiar face

Oh, Sony. Its earliest Android tablet efforts were a little odd (and that's putting it politely), but the company eventually managed to get its act toget

Incredibly thin and waterproof, too ; Snappy performance ; Sony's Android UI is thoughtful and lightweight

Relatively short battery life ; Glossy screen ; Middling speakers ; Both cameras are underwhelming

Not only is the Tablet Z2 the thinnest and lightest tab Sony has ever made, but also it's far and away the best. It's trim design and strong spec sheet makes it a strong competitor against similarly sized tabs from Sony's arch-rival, Samsung.

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet review: Elemental

Thinnest, lightest, highest water resistance - there are plenty of superlatives you can throw at the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet - prettiest is another, though that one's more subjective. What is certain is that Sony has crafted one of the best tablets of 2014.

Optional 3G and 4G LTE (Cat. 3, 100Mbps) ; 10.1" 16M-color capacitive touchscreen Triluminos display, 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, 224pixel density; X-Reality engine; shatter proof and scratch-resistant glass ; Android OS v4.4 KitKat with custom UI ;...

Sony has a long history of excellence in hardware design and the Xperia Z2 Tablet is a testament to that. It took the company a few generations to refine the OmniBalance body but the results speak for themselves - no other tablet is this thin or light.

The razor-thin, waterproof Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

Sony's Xperia Z2 Tablet squashes a great display and a lightning-fast processor into a ridiculously skinny, waterproof body.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet's processor is searingly powerful and copes well with games. It has a bright, vivid display and its razor-thin body can be taken in the shower without worry.

It loses its battery far too quickly in standby mode. Huge bezels around the display don't look good and make the body needlessly big, and its slim design has resulted in the whole thing being a little flexible.

While the battery is a concern, the Xperia Z2 Tablet is still a good-looking slate that's loaded with more than enough power for anything you're likely to throw at it. It's a good choice if you're looking for a more affordable iPad alternative with 4G...

Sony isn't usually in the Android limelight, and that's too bad. This tablet has everything you could want from a 10-inch slate.

1080p display is crisp, clear, and great for watching video ; Thin, light, and easy to cart around

Rear-facing camera is subpar ; Speakers easily covered up because of their poor placement

The Xperia Z2 Tablet is water-resistant, thin, and, easy to use on a commute. But it also carries a fairly steep price tag.

Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet review: One Sony, two devices

After years of extensive testing, I have determined the perfect screen size for watching YouTube videos in bed. It's just over 5 inches. Anything larger and you have to hold the device too far from that ideal chest-perching point, anything smaller and...

Stunning, minimalist design ; Display looks gorgeous indoors ; Nice stereo speakers ; Thinner and lighter than the iPad AIr, yet battery lasts just as long

Screen is practically useless on a sunny day ; Would benefit from a wider selection of tablet apps ; You can buy two Nexus 7s for the price

Sony is learning from past missteps, but has it learned enough?

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is a stylish and powerful Android tablet, but aside from its razor thin profile, there's little to distinguish it from its peers.

Thin and light. Waterproof. Sharp display. Speedy Snapdragon 801 processor.

Mediocre battery life. Feels delicate.

Conclusions The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is surely among the fastest, most impressively designed Android tablets around, but it's somewhat unimaginative and lacks a distinctive feature to justify its $500 price tag. The display is good, but not...

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet review:

The Apple iPad Air might be a slick piece of design, but dunk it in the bath and it'll quickly turn into a lifeless slab. Enter the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet -- a 10.1-inch slate that is completely waterproof. It replaces Sony's existing Xperia Tablet Z ,...
