Samsung PNB850 review: Samsung PNB850

Samsung PNB850

Striking design with 1.2 inch-thick panel; reproduces deep black levels; accurate color with superb saturation, properly handles 1080p/24 sources; extensive feature set with Yahoo widgets, network streaming and built-in content; solid connectivity with...

More expensive than thicker plasma HDTVs; no S-Video inputs.

With picture quality that matches its less-expensive brother but not the best of the stiff competition, the main appeal of the Samsung PNB850/860 series is based on its sleek, ultrathin panel.

Samsung PN50B850

The Samsung PN50B850 is the thinnest big-screen HDTV we've seen, and its picture quality and features will turn heads.

Thin panel design. Excellent color. Very good SD picture quality. Energy efficient. Tons of media features.

Below-average picture contrast in a dark environment. Some white-balance inconsistencies. No de-judder feature.

Samsung PN58B850 Plasma HDTV First Impressions Review - Intro

The flagship of Samsung's 2009 Plasma line, the PN58B850 is a 58-inch model that's been on a serious diet. At just 1.19 inches thick, this new Plasma follows Samsung's less is more design phlosophy to the extreme; with their optional low profile wall...

It's hard to come up with any real conclusions on the PN58B850 without the biggest piece of buying information: price. Samsung have not revealed the price of this model yet, but we do know that it will be available in the first quarter of this year....

No longer will you have to worry about ghosting artifacts and you can watch any action movie or sports game and feel like you are really there. Although LCD models may try to mimic the fluid playback a plasma TV brings to the table, they can't hold a...

Samsung PN50B850 Review

In terms of performance, Samsung PN50B850 is on the same level with the models from the previous 650 series from the same company. One would wonder why spend more on this 50 inch plasma TV, if the performance is the same, but it would only mean that...

Good black levels (improved compared to last year) ; Highly accurate colors (better than Panasonic models) ; Solid video processing ; Solid standard definition processing

No S-video input ; Relatively expensive, being a slim model ; Though anti-glare performance is good, other models are better

As mentioned earlier, there is not much improvement over the 650 series from Samsung, when we talk about these models from the top of the line series. There are even tests that show that the black levels on 650 models are a tad better than on Samsung...

Samsung PN58B850 Review

Just saying that Samsung PN58B850 is a top of the line plasma TV may seem like an understatement, if one just throws a single look at it. With its 1.2 inch depth in frame, that makes it look elegantly thin from the side, this series from Samsung is...

Good black levels ; Very accurate colors ; Very good video processing ; Solid standard definition processing

No S-video input ; Relatively expensive because it is slim ; Anti-glare performance is good but other models are better

Even if it does not match the performance of Panasonic top of the line products, Samsung PN58B850 does not come short in terms of performance. Its black levels are more than decent, the colors are as accurate as they come, and its video processing...

Samsung Series 8 (PS50B850) plasma television

Great contrast, super-thin design, great motion handling, decent power consumption for a plasma

Expensive

Samsung's Series 8 (PS50B850) plasma television is a brilliant product. Almost-peerless picture quality, a great design and a range of integrated features make it yet another new Samsung TV we heartily recommend. You do pay for the privilege, but...

Samsung PS50B850

The Samsung PS50B850 is an attractively slim plasma TV that offers all the latest bells and whistles with good picture quality to boot.

Clean, sharp visuals ; Good blacks and natural colours ; YouTube playback ; DLNA network multimedia streaming ; Wi-Fi-ready ; Backlit remote ; Ultraslim, attractive design

Bezel rattles with strong bass ; Tight port placement incompatible with thick cables ; Stain magnet and scratch-prone ; Mismatched metal stand ; Slight buzzing noise

If you're willing to overlook the sound quality and the soft buzzing of the set in operation, the AU$4299 PS50B850 is good value for money. Unfortunately, it's still not a Kuro killer.
