Seiki's cheap 4K TV: More pixels don't make a better picture

The Seiki SE50UY04 breaks new ground in pricing for a TV with 4K resolution. That's the good news. But all those extra pixels don't mean its picture is better than that of a standard 1080p TV.

The ; is inexpensive for a TV with 4K/Ultra-High Definition resolution. Looks good from up close with 4K-compatible PC games; decent color accuracy; three HDMI inputs; simple styling and feature set.

Must sit close to the 50-inch screen to realize the benefit of 4K content; very little 4K content currently available; picture quality with non-4K content is worse than that of most other TVs in this price range, with light black levels, poor screen...

Seiki's SE50UY04 can't compete with most standard HDTVs at this price in terms of picture quality, but at least it breaks new pricing ground for 4K resolution.

Seiki SE50UY04 ( 4K UHD)

So the question for prospective buyers becomes, is the Seiki's extra resolution worth the extra money compared with other 50-inch TVs? For most people the answer is a resounding, "No!" perhaps preceded by an expletive.

Seiki SE50UY04

You won't find a 4K HDTV as affordable as this $1,500 50-inch model from newcomer Seiki. The low price means you'll have to make sacrifices in picture quality and features, and the real question is, with very little content, whether anyone really needs...

Very inexpensive for a 4K HDTV. Bright panel.

Skewed colors. Poor shadow details. Little 4K content available.

Still in its infancy, 4K has a long way to go. And while the Seiki SE50UY04's $1,500 price tag makes it at least feasible to purchase, there isn't enough 4K content to justify it yet. It's a decent screen that gets satisfyingly bright and dark, but...

"Worse manufacto ever."

I would not buy another Seiki product again. I have a nine month old SE50FY19A that won't turn on. Seiki won't honor the warranty because I can't produce the store receipt. I sent them the bank statement where I charged it. A picture of the ID plate on...

Nothing

IT won't turn on.

Bad product and bad customer service. No real warranty.

I bought a 55" Seiki Tv (model# LE55G77E) on Feb 22, 2014 and had pixel problems then.My screen went blank on Feb 17, 2015.I contacted the company and spoke about the warranty policy on their website (seiki.com) which states: If an issue can't be...

"Unbeatable value as a monitor if you can put up with quirks"

I've been using my 50 inch Seiki 4k UHD TV for almost 6 months as a monitor, and it has been a tremendous introduction into the 4k UHD world. In my opinion is the best possible value you can buy in a UHD TV at this time as long as you have reasonable...

+ 4k resolution is AMAZING + Bright + No dead pixels, no stuck pixels + Color looks good + Very low cost + multiple input sources

- Lack of power management - Uneven brightness across screen

"Fraudulent warranty representations."

Dishonest, deceitful company. Don't risk your money and time on them.

None. If the tv breaks, you will be out of money and a tv.

Company is fraudulent with their warranty. The website says "best warranty in the business". The opposite is true. I made a warranty claim in August 2013 and it is now January 2014 and they have done nothing but lie to me and give me the run around.

4K LED LCD at $1199 delivers 4K for 1/4 the $ of Sony!

Open letter to the Cnet Reviewer: I think your rating/review is plain wrong as you totally skipped using 4K upconverting receivers and 4K upconverting blu-ray players to drive this 4K TV all the time, with any source upconverted! Also, high resolution...

4K at 3840x2160p , stunning picture resolution & very good quality when calibrated. Excellent for viewing and editing high resolution photos and video. Accepts true 120Hz at 1080p (not fake 120Hz) Great for PC as desktop and gaming display.

Use the $3700 you saved not buying the Sony 4K set for an upconverting 4K Receiver for 1080p sources. It's an LED LCD, not an OLED or Plasma. At $1199 you'll have to wait years before those technologies work their way down to this 4K pricepoint.
