Sharp LC42XD1E 42in LCD TV

Sharp joins the 1080p party.

The main thing about the 42XD1E, though, is that its imperfections aren’t really that serious overall – and for the most part they’re also very common across the LCD world as a whole. The 42XD1E’s many strengths, however, are certainly not common. So...

Sharp LC-42XD1E review

No component video input

This 42in Full HD LCD TV sees the acclaimed flatscreen manufacturer step up its game in emphatic fashion

Sharp Aquos LC42XD1E

This Sharp TV is the first in this group test with a full HD pixel count of 1920x1080. So clearly it takes its high definition duties seriously - a fact backed up by the fact that it can map 1920x1080 HD sources directly to its own pixel count, with no...

Full HD resolution, excellent HD picture detail, rich and bright colours

Some motion smearing, hollow blacks, VGA has to be shared for PC and component duties

Sharp LC-42XD1E

Most manufacturers' new ranges of TVs seem like simply a gentle progression from what they've produced before. But on the evidence of the LC-42XD1E, Sharp's new LCD range is more like a full-blown revolution

Astounding HD sharpness, Vibrant colours, Great price

No component video input, Some standard-def MPEG artefacts

A superb LCD TV at a price that's hard to ignore

Sharp LC42XD1E Review - 42" Aquos Full HD 1080p LCD TV

Launched in October 2006 to much fanfare, Sharp's XD1E is the latest addition to their very respectable Aquos range of LCD TVs in the United Kingdom. Consumers have 4 choices when it comes to screen size: the 37" & 42" versions with 3-wave backlight;...

Fantastic black level ; Desirable near-D65 greyscale easily achieved using "Low" colour temperature preset ; Accurate primary colour points ; Incredible detail from 1920x1080 resolution and 1:1 mapping without overscan ; Tint control and RGB colour...

Noisy picture unless fed with the most pristine of signals ; Limited viewing angle... less than 60° in our case ; Electronic buzz (even in standby) and low-pitched hum ; Uneven backlight may affect picture quality (though not in our case) ; Red push...

With an online price tag of around £1100, the Sharp LC42XD1E represents excellent value for money... with a few caveats:

Sharp LC-42XD1E

It certainly looks the part, with a smart gloss black bezel combining a treat with a 'wavy line' of silver speakers along the bottom. It's got two HDMIs too, but oddly no dedicated component video input. Instead you must use a provided adaptor to get...

Superb picture quality, lush design, bags of features, and great value

PC and component sources have to share a connection, you can mess pictures up if you don't take care

FANTASTIC SET FOR THE CASH

Excellent, in this price range def one of the best sets around.

Excellent Pictue, good looks, and can be picked up for around 700 quid.

Speakers and a bit weak and lack bass, but your probably going to hook it up to a surround sound system anyway?

Sharp Aquos LC42XD1E

An excellent blend of features with very good picture and sound, incredible picture when matched to an HDDVD player.

Only two HDMI, and occasional unnatural skintones against light or brightly lit backgrounds in SDTV

Sharp Aquos LC42XD1E

When I first got the TV I was suprised at how much the picture was improved for regular TV and movies. For the first month or so it almost ruined my TV watching because I could see more detail and this made the sets and camera work look cheap. Highly...

The remote is a bit complicated. We mostly use the Sky remote when watching TV.
