Sony Bravia KDL-37EX503 37in LCD TV

We take a look at the 37in version of this Freeview HD-enabled LCD television.

Good at upscaling to HD ; Sharp HD pictures ; Good Freeview HD tuner handling

Poor black level response ; Lacks bass ; Little motion blur

Actually, it’s the latter. For while the 37EX503 and 40EX503 certainly aren’t chalk and cheese, there’s enough difference between them to earn one model a Recommended badge while the other goes home merely with an appreciative pat on the back.

Sony Bravia KDL-40EX503 40in LCD TV

The first commercially available Freeview HD TV.

Freeview HD included ; Bravia Internet video platform ; Excellent black levels

Slightly washed-out colours ; No 200Hz engine

The KDL-40EX503 is the most revolutionary and groundbreaking TV I’ve seen from Sony for an age - at least in terms of something that's actually accessible to the mainstream TV buying public.

Sony KDL-32EX503 review

Blu-ray images look sensational on the excellent Sony KDL-32EX503

Nice to use ; class-leading motion handling ; excellent black levels and edge definition

Not as slim as some rivals

The Sony won’t give up its five-star rating without a serious fight – the EX503 is still one of the frontrunners in its class

Sony KDL-37EX503 review

Best 37in TV, Awards 2010. The Sony KDL-37EX503 simply sucks out more detail and subtlety from any content thrown its way

Super-smooth motion ; fine insight ; natural yet dynamic colours ; unrivalled sense of depth ; myriad features

Very little, though there are slimmer sets here if bulk is a concern

Best 37in TV, Awards 2010. It’s impossible to argue with what Sony has achieved with such an affordable set

Sony KDL-46EX503 review

It's safe to say that, despite the poor sound, this Sony represents amazing value for money

Exceptional pictures from all sources, especially where detail and sharpness is concerned ; great spec and online services ; nice styling

Disappointing sound

Sony’s essential range is designed to offer a brilliant performance and great features at an affordable price – mission accomplished

Sony KDL-40EX503 review

TV Product of the Year, Awards 2010. At this price the Sony KDL-40EX503 is simply sensational value for money

Sensational value for money ; class-leading picture quality across the board ; Freeview HD tuner ; sounds impressively detailed

Remote feels a little awkward, but that’s just being picky

TV Product of the Year, Awards 2010. A fantastic addition to the Sony range, and one that should be sampled at all costs

Sony KDL-32EX503

It's no good possessing the latest and greatest technology - in this case, Sony's Freeview HD tuner - if the delivery is botched. On this gloss black, gunmetal-bottomed LCD TV, the new high-def TV platform is handled so skilfully that memories of your...

XMB interface, smooth pictures from all sources, Freeview HD software

Lack of sharpness, some judder

An excellent Freeview HD performer, this small Sony keeps it light when it comes to picture processing; high-def pictures can lack ultimate detail and show-up a touch of judder and blur, but the prize for the patient is superbly clean images unrivalled...

Sony Bravia KDL-46EX503 television

Sony has been at the centre of the flat TV world this summer, shouting about its Bravia's built-in Freeview HD tuners and, on some models, 3D compatibility. Spotted online for much nearer £1000, the rather utilitarian-looking Sony's use of LCD over LED...

Spotted online for much nearer £1000, the rather utilitarian-looking Sony's use of LCD over LED does add some depth, but it still manages a superb performance with both Freeview HD channels and Blu-ray. Excellent colour and contrast are the highlights...

Sony Bravia KDL-46EX503 review

Sony plays it safe with this good value bigscreen

Good upscaling ; Clean picture ; Contrast ; User interface

Soft picture ; Cluttered online platform ; Average build quality

As its 'Essentials' moniker suggests, Sony has put just enough tech on this 46in LCD TV for it to compete on both price and performance.

Sony Bravia KDL-32EX503 review

It's no LED, but Sony's polished Essential range lives up to its name

Interface ; Clean HD & SD pictures ; Sound

High price ; Limited digital file compatibility ; Crowded internet video platform

If you're after something more than just a basic flatscreen TV, this polished affair from Sony makes for a tempting option.
