Sony KDL-40 W 5500

Awkward channel navigation., Confusing picture-settings., No format-switching for HD signals

Patience pays off with this Sony: Once you've trawled through the mystifying picture menus, and made your peace with the lack of 4:3 or zoom settings for HD signals, you're rewarded with outstanding picture quality. Just make sure you sit right in the...

Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500 40in LCD TV

The Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500 LCD TV is a fine performer, especially for its price.

The 40W5500 is not without its faults. For instance, the Applicast system currently feels half-baked, I'd like to hear more bass in its audio, and there's room for adding a touch more sharpness to standard definition broadcasts. But just because...

Sony KDL-40W5500 review

Here's the replacement for the 2008 Award-winning Sony KDL-40W4500. Question is, is it any better?

Impeccable ergonomics ; immersive Blu-ray images, especially where motion is concerned ; quite reasonable sound

Noticeably uneven backlighting, even when showing images ; so-so TV tuners

In some ways this is an improvement over the outgoing W4500, but with such irregular backlighting it can't make that fifth star

Sony KDL-40W5500 Bravia LCD TV review

Marvel at Sony's 40" LCD all-rounder, even if it is 10cm thick

Impressive dynamic contrast ; Smooth motion ; Networking

Styling isn't particularly great ; AppliCast feature desperately needs real content

Sony have simply stripped out the highest-end features and left a well-priced TV with excellent picture quality

Review: Sony Bravia KDL-40W5500

Sony's reputation for technology is well deserved – they barely get things wrong. The Bravia range of TVs have really caught the imagination of the general public thanks to some attractive design, good picture quality and clever ad campaigns so when it...

Sony KDL-40W5500

Sadly it doesn't take many seconds to figure out that these 'Applicast' online services are extremely content-light versus the Philips online offering. So let's move swiftly on to the 40W5500's other features, which include 100Hz MotionFlow processing,...

Consistently superb pictures, decent set of features, satisfying audio

Online services limited, minor backlight inconsistencies

Sony KDL-40W5500

The Sony KDL-40W5500 joins an elite group of top performing mid range LCD TV's ..

Picture quality in particular black level ability

Benefits of 100Hz do not convince

Sony are getting closer and closer to delivering world beating flat panel TV's. So often frustrating in the past, the promise of all of that Sony technology coming together in their TV's finally seems to behappening in the 40W5500 - a class leading mid...

Sony KDL40W5500

Probably the most hotly anticipated flat screen HDTV this spring, the Sony KDL40W5500 LCD television has finally arrived on our test bench this week. On paper, the Sony KDL40W5500 Bravia LCD TV improves upon its predecessor the W4500 series by offering...

Blacks among the deepest on a non-LED-backlit LCD TV ; Very good standard-definition upscaling ; Highly competent SD film mode deinterlacing ; White balance and gamma controls available in user menu ; Motionflow 100Hz reduces motion blur without...

Mediocre SD video mode deinterlacing (limited jaggies reduction) ; Slight red push (colour decoding error) ; Input lag may affect sensitive gamers ; Mild clouding and LCD backlight bleed (negligible once calibrated) ; RSS widget very fussy about feed...

Besides offering media streaming (DLNA) and internet connectivity (Applicast), the Sony KDL40W5500 LCD television successfully addresses the few gripes we had with its predecessor the W4500 series:
