Sony Bravia KDL-40W4000 Full HD 40in LCD TV

Sony rights the wrongs of the past with its latest Full HD 40in LCD TV.

After misfiring so badly with its previous LCD set, Sony has returned to form in quite spectacular fashion with the 40W4000. In fact, this TV isn't just good, it's shockingly good.

Sony KDL-40W4000

Where incremental steps forward are becoming commonplace, the Sony is a giant leap - simply stunning

One of the sharpest, punchiest, most detailed HD performances yet ; terrifically balanced and clean SD playback

Doesn't quite make the most of poor Freeview channels

The big-screen equivalent of fine Champagne: you can buy cheaper substitutes, but quality shines through

A giant leap forward, a simply stunning set, with a picture that’s full of energy and detail

Sony KDL-40W4000 review

With vast improvements over its predecessor, this is one desirable 40" LCD

Outstanding pictures ; Tasty design ; Impressive selection of connections ; Good price

No 100Hz ; Minor shimmer over fine detailing

The mixed results that we’ve seen from other Sony LCDs this year appear to have been ironed out

Sony KDL40W4000 Review: 40" Bravia 1080p LCD HDTV Panel

Update: The Sony KDL40W4000 is slowly being phased out... its replacement will be the newly launched Sony KDL40W5500 HDTV.

Accurate primary colours with excellent decoding ; Excellent black level with decent shadow detail ; Exquisite high-definition detail from "Full Pixel" 1:1 pixel mapping ; Handles 1080p/24 video signal correctly without telecine judder ; Film Mode]...

No white balance control in user menu for greyscale calibration ; Motion resolution not as good as those on HDTVs equipped with MCFI/ 100Hz technology ; Fails to apply 3:2/ 2:2 pulldown to 480i/ 576i film-based content even with [Film Mode] set to...

In addition to the inherited virtues of excellent blacks, accurate primary colours, exquisite fine detail portrayal and solid connectivity, the Sony KDL40W4000 does show some areas of improvement over the outgoing W3000 series: calibrated black level...

Sony KDL-40W4000

Sony finally delivers in the LCD TV market

Stylish looks / Bravia Engine 2 / Great connections

No 100Hz processing

The good news starts as soon as you unbox the 40in 40W4000 and clock its gorgeously robust ‘Midnight Sky’ (AKA black…) bezel, sumptuously offset by both a silver metallic trim and novel see-through strip along its bottom edge
