Sony KDL-55W955B

Sony's impressive 2014 TV run grinds to a shuddering halt

Wedge design is unusual and attractive, Colour handling and detail levels are excellent, Content focus of the Smart TV system works well

Poor native black level response, Cheaper Sony sets' pictures are better!, Wedge design won't appeal to everyone

Sony KDL-55W955B review

The Sony KDL-55W955B ushers in a new TV shape for 2014

Sharp ; colour rich images ; Superior audio performance ; Distinctive wedge design

Lack of deep blacks ; Unreliable multimedia playback ; Incomplete catch-up roster

Sony KDL-55W955 review

Sony gives the TV market a wedgey

The wedge design works ; Good sound quality ; Some good Smart features ; Bright pictures look great

Black levels are average ; Cheaper Sony TVs are better ; Wedge design may divide ; It's a big unit

The 55W955 is something of a blip. While it looks the part and delivers some good features, its picture quality isn't where it should be for its lofty position in Sony's range.

Remarkably clear and detailed picture, Natural colour balance, Smooth motion, Deep black levels, Decent sound, Smart interface is slick and intuitive, Remote is responsive and easy to use, Sleek design, Good connectivity and features

Whites could be a touch brighter and punchier, Hint of 3D image instability, Reds could be more vivid, Rivals offer crisper detail

It may have lost a star, but this 50in Sony is still worth an audition

The W95 is a good TV in many regards, but we expect fireworks from a flagship set and the Sony just doesn't quite deliver

Good detail and motion handling ; Excellent colour balance ; Dynamic sound

Struggles with blacks and shadow detail ; Inconsistent backlight ; Picture could be more immersive

Flagship products always come with the weight of expectation, it’s just a shame that we’re left wanting more from the Sony KDL-55W955B TV.

Sony KDL-55W955

Trivial Pursuit piece. Cheese. Door stop. Shoe. Rogue Squadron pilot. The humble wedge has many uses. In 2014, we can add TV design to that illustrious list, as Sony introduces a wedge shape to its higher-end TV line-up.

Excellent image detail and motion resolution; Wedge design; Discovery content bar

Clunky app portal; sluggish behaviour; unstable media server; ugly Skype camera; Social View nonsense

Sony KDL-55W955 LED Smart TV review

The 55-inch Sony KDL-55W955 is the first of the company's new "wedge" flatscreen designs to land on our test bench. Reserved for its W85 and W95 Full HD screens and the X85/X9 4K Ultra-HD fleet, the triangle profile isn't just eye-catching but cleverly...

Sony’s innovative wedge design reaps big rewards when it comes to audio performance, motion handling and colour fidelity are top notch, a raft of Smart connectivity options ensure you’ll always have something to watch

Multimedia playback is disappointingly flaky (particularly via network NAS), Smart proposition lacks ITV Player and 4OD, Social View and Skype implementations not entirely convincing, images unable to deliver deepest black levels

The Sony W95 is a convincing advert for Sony's unconventional wedge design. The look is not only fresh but technically innovative, specifically when it comes to audio performance where the W95 forcefully out-shouts rival large screens.

Sony Bravia KDL-55W955 review

Sony's latest plan to return to the glory days when it ruled the world of TVs is to concentrate on higher-end, more expensive models, leaving other manufacturers to duke it out at the cheaper end of the market. The KDL-55W955 is a pretty important TV...

The Sony KDL-55W955 has good picture processing, wide viewing angles and more potent sound than many of its rivals. Its colours are also warm and inviting, while its passive 3D performance is relatively good.

Lacking the contrast and black level performance to justify its high price tag, the W955 is also lacking in other areas. Its smart TV system could do with more apps, the design looks chunky and its trackpad remote isn’t as good as LG's motion zapper.

Despite good sound quality and an improved menu system, the KDL-55W955 remains a letdown in the picture department compared to other high-end TVs, as its black levels and contrast performance just aren't anywhere near good enough to justify its...

Sony KDL-55W955B (W95) 3D LED Television Review

Sony's flagship 1080p TV for 2014 packs in very accomplished sound and a wealth of apps and features but the picture quality doesn't match up to the...

Wedge design is lovely & helps audio ; Truckloads of apps and features ; Adjustable feet is great move

Poor native contrast for a top tier TV ; Some array banding ; Colours are too saturated to meet standards ; UI is too content discovery heavy

Sony’s flagship 1080p TV breaks the mould in terms of its design, with an innovative shape allowing it to house a very respectable set of speakers. Not only that but we think the wedge also looks lovely in the flesh and we also like Sony’s thinking...
