Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

With an excellent picture, and surprising comfort, the Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer is the best head-mounted display we've seen yet, but it's still an expensive novelty.

Successfully simulates a big screen viewed from afar. Excellent picture. Comfortable design.

HDMI input only. Requires plug-in power through separate processor device. No Dolby or DTS support.

Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer review: Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

It's fun! Whether it's for gaming or movies, the ; is one of the best 3D displays on the market, with zero crosstalk. Based on OLED technology, the headset is capable of deep, deep black levels, and whether in 2D or 3D, all images have surprising...

The headset is heavy and becomes quite uncomfortable with extended use. It's not possible to get the whole screen in focus at once, resulting in blurring at the edges. The effects of its lower resolution are apparent: detail levels aren't up there with...

While the Sony HMZ-T1 personal headset is capable of some of the best 3D effects I've ever seen, it's uncomfortable to wear for extended periods and images suffer from blurriness.

Can Sony bring back the head-mounted display?

Exceptional image quality ; Fantastic 3D effect ; Excellent immersion

Difficult to adjust right ; Tethered, not wireless ; Limited connectivity ; Lens glare ; Iffy audio for the price ; Creaky plastic arms ; Somewhat tiring to wear

Review: Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer

Sony kindly sent me their latest home cinema product: a strange goggle-like "Personal 3D Viewer" that displays 3D movies and games in an immersive environment. Take a look in my review

I will admit, the Personal 3D Viewer has gifted me probably the best movie viewing experience I have ever had inside the comfort of in my own home. The dual-OLED displays appear huge and immersive inside the Viewer, and they way they display 3D ensures...

Review: Sony 3D Personal Viewer HMZ-T1

Sony sets out for truly personal 3D TV.

Great, forward-thinking external design ; Attractive 3D OLED displays ; Truly immersive ; Easy to set up ; Adds new layer to gaming

Too front-heavy and slightly unwieldy ; Uncomfortable for long periods for some wearers ; Not adjustable ; Merely average audio; headphones can't be swapped ; Not the traditional Sony polish

For those who remember the 1990’s, much of the technology talk at the time surrounded the concept of virtual reality, or VR. Movies like The Lawnmower Man took viewers into incredible virtual worlds where they were fully immersed. That dream has la

Sony HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer Review

An immersive 3D experience with some flaws.

Futuristic design, good 3D effects, vivid color display

Pricey, headphones need improvement, causes discomfort with prolonged use, only supports HDMI, no options for playing audio on other output devices

With the headset actually on my head. I was immediately aware of the pressure that it was exerting on my forehead and my nose. While it wasn’t discomforting, I could tell that if I sat in a chair and used this device for longer than half an hour, I’d...

Sony Personal 3D Viewer (HMZ-T1) head-mounted display

Strap this visor on your head to watch 3D movies or games close-up

Excellent 3D effect ; Great colour and black levels

Uncomfortable after half an hour ; Low resolution (720p) ; It’s hard to get the whole image in focus

Sony’s Personal 3D Viewer is definitely a niche product. We can’t see many units selling -- it’s not a very sociable product, it can be uncomfortable and it really only appeals to 3D fans -- but if you can get it set up correctly it’s able to produce a...

Sony Personal 3D Viewer (HMZ-T1) review

The Sony Personal 3D Viewer (HMZ-T1) is a head-mounted display that uses a 720p OLED screen in front of each eye, creating a crosstalk-free 3D effect. It's somewhat difficult to set up correctly and can be uncomfortable. If you get it right, though, it...

Sony Personal 3D Viewer (HMZ-T1)

It works brilliantly, but it's not for everyone. If you're single, cashed up, love 3D movies to death or need an immersive gaming experience, then the Personal 3D Viewer may just be the ticket for you.

Good 3D experience ; Immersive gaming experience ; Cinema-sized viewing

Fiddly and time consuming to set up ; Wired connectivity to processing unit

And we suspect that for many, the response will be similar. On the other hand, if you're single, cashed up, love 3D movies to death or need an immersive gaming experience, then the Personal 3D Viewer may just be the ticket for you.
