Thinkware X500 dash cam review: It packs advanced features in an annoying design

The ThinkWare X500's advanced features—especially the ability to record front and rear—set it apart from the crowd. But the interface is counterintuitive and an alternative suction mounting system should be provided.

Integrated GPS ; Records both front and rear (with optional camera) ; Speed trap warnings

Doesn't take photos ; Doesn't run off USB power ; Permanent mount on rearview camera means you have to leave it in the car ; Front camera mount swivels in only one direction

The X500's advanced features--especially the ability to record front and rear--set it apart from the crowd. But the interface is counterintuitive, and a removable mounting system should be provided.

Thinkware Dash Cam X500

The Thinkware Dash Cam X500 goes for $279 in the US and £199 in the UK, where speed zones and cameras would make it more useful. Australian pricing was not available, but the company does have an Australian distributor .

The Thinkware Dash Cam X500 automatically records and saves driving and collision footage using a wide lens and HD video. GPS encoding on the video lets you see precisely where incidents occurred. A built-in speed and red-light camera database lets the...

The driver assistance features, such as the forward collision warning, trigger too easily to be useful. The viewer software lacks an easy interface for selecting among available video footage.

Financial responsibility laws for drivers often make dashcams superfluous, but if one makes sense in your driving climate, the Thinkware Dash Cam X500 not only reliably records collision footage but offers a few extras that might come in handy, such as...

Thinkware X500 review: A dash cam with some cool extra features

Our Thinkware X500 review takes a look at a dash cam that offers a road safety warning system in addition to normal driving video recording.

Road Safety Warning System is a handy addition. Inclusion of MicroSD card, adapter, and USB card reader is fantastic.

Uses DC power adapter, would prefer USB w/DC power adapter. Would prefer a suction mount over 3M tape mounting. Road Safety Warning System has issues when driving into direct sunlight, triggers too easily at times. PC software is pretty lacking.

The Thinkware X500 dash cam not only records your daily drive, but also includes additional Road Safety Warning System features that are very useful. If you’re looking for a dash cam with a few extras like red light and speed camera zone ratings, you...

Thinkware Dash Cam X500 review: Records collisions, warns of speed cameras

Going above and beyond simple incident recording, the Thinkware Dash Cam X500 uses its camera to give drivers forward collision alerts and its GPS to warn of speed cameras.

Good picture and thats about it

Can not be connected to any computer as no USB interface or WiFi. Sd card is very fiddly to take in and out. No build in battery so the only power option is connecting to the cigaret lighter to adjust and playback. Mounting is with 3M sticker to the...
